So, what is the deal with tethering on this phone? From what I understand the wifi hotspot is free for a month, and then it costs $30? And wired tethering is totally free using either PDANET or the software right on the phone? Let me know if this is correct.

Yes, HTC Sync is seamless - you don't need PDANet at all.
