Tethering -- FoxFi Alternatives?

Is this true? Why is this true? How does foxfi tether any different in a way that is hidden to the carrier? I don't tether often ( and only like 3-5mbs per session) but I use barnacle and haven't receive a notification yet. Just wondering if any one had any real insight on this instead of speculation.

I always thought it was WHAT you were connecting to that would get you caught as it gives it away ..aka xbox/ps3 servers.

Does anyone know of good tethering apps besides foxFi? Preferably for free, but not necessarily required to be free.

I am against foxFi's policy of disabling your current app already on your phone, forcing you to upgrade, w/o announcement crippling the upgraded app, then charging you for the same old foxFi that you already had running just fine.

If they had simply halted development of the free version w/o disabling your previous version, I would have ug'ed when the time came, but now, I am seeking an alternative.
