Tethering on the Spirit

Ok since there is no root yet has anyone been able to get the tethering feature to on any of the unlimited plans? I am seriously considering getting this phone, as opposed to shelling out $500 for a galaxy S3 however I occasionally need to tether while on the road and would rather not have to invest an extra $10 a month for something I rarely use.

Best regards,
- Jace

For grins n'giggles I tried the native app. No joy. I did actually get connected to my laptop but was showing no Connectivity.

I'm not real concerned with it for the moment though I am listening here about it... :)

What about USB tethering? I do that now with my Optimus M+ using pdanet. I saw that this has it as one of the USB connection options. I understand the coolness of wifi tethering, but if USB is an option, why not use it?

Tethering works just fine. All you need to do is change the user agent on your computer to match the phone, or you can use pdanet.

from what i know, metro's tethering is limited. I've heard they only let you get on YouTube and social media.

As great as this phone looks and sounds, I won't buy it without root for this reason. Tethering is a must for me and WiFi Tether for Root Users is the best tethering app I've used so far. It has so many options and can even hide tethering so your carrier won't know you're doing it.

Foxfi used to be a great tethering app for non-rooted devices but it sucks now. It was free for unlimited tethering but those versions no longer work. The free version now kicks you off after every 10 minutes, pushing you to buy the paid version for a whopping $7.

I been using the 4G hotspot app on the spirit and it works fine. I also use easytether pro for usb and it also works good.

If he doesn't have a tethering plan it won't work so he has to change the user agent on the device he's trying to connect to or use a VPN

Metro's tether app wont work if you don't have the tether plan. And like i said we don't have root to the market tether apps

Someone on another board mentioned Klink to tether,I'm going to give that a shot in the morning & see if that works. I'll post back my results after I have a chance to evaluate it.

Thats what I just said, it wont work without a tethering plan so you have to make changes on the device your trying to tether to so root doesnt matter . Why would root matter if your not doing anything on your phone? All the OP has to do is change the user agent on the device he's tethering to or use a VPN on the device he's tethering to.

he is using his phone, he's trying to tether a device through his phones 4g. You either have to buy their plan to use their tether app, or use a tether app from the market, and the ones from the market require root. maybe you and i are just miss understanding each other lol

The way I'm reading each of these posts, you two are saying the exact same thing. Gman is adding that in order for it to work, the OP would have to change the user agent in his computer browser. There are a couple of non-root tether apps, but can't remember now what they are. I have no idea if they work or not, 'cause I've never tried 'em.

You know, I believe that USB tethering does work with out root. I saw that there is that option listed when you connect your phone via the USB cable. Give that a try. You'd still be using the 4G, and just transfering the data over the USB cable. USB isn't that slow.

Thought I'd bump this up and see if there were anymore developments.

Surely some of you are t-wording it or usb-ing it. What are you using for the t-word app and how is it all working out?

Did the Spirit getting root make any difference?
