Help Tethering Questions

Dillinger

Newbie
I saw that Sprint has recently removed tethering apps from the market and I was looking for a recommendation for a good one I can download directly from the web. I know sprint has the service for $$ every month but I am looking for a free option.

1) - What tethering app would you recomend?

2) - Does it need to be wired or can it be done as a WiFi hotspot?

3) - I read recently about Sprint charging for data overages as it relates to tethering. Does anyone have information about this?

If you're willing to invest some time and effort you can also USB tether with the azilink application. It basically uses openVPN to listen for connections on a particular port. You have to perform some configuration on whatever machine you wish to use it on though. I run Ubuntu so I basically followed these instructions (a few slight tweaks required):

Linux + GNU = Humans Enabled

If you're on Windows or Mac then look just above the comments (below the video) and he links to some posts for tethering with OS X and Windows too.

I run a ROM where the native hotspot is unlocked (MikG) but it only seems to work if I'm connected to 3G. If I enable 4G then it doesn't seem to work. But using azilink I can tether on 3G or 4G. I did it for work one day while I was waiting for my car at the shop...and I was getting like 8mbps speeds on 4G which was fantastic.

I remember a program, Pda Net which i believe was a free wired tether program as well. Is anyone familiarly with that?

Currently my biggest issue is the fact that my phone is Not rooted. Do any of these methods work with a stock phone?

PDAnet and EasyTether should work fine with an unrooted phone, but they have limitations for the type of protocols they will support (unless you pay for their full version). For example, they won't allow you to access sites over the HTTPS protocol unless you have their full version. I could never get EasyTether to work with Ubuntu though I never tried contacting their support for assistance.

I was able to get azilink running with several different machines though (two different Ubuntu machines as well as a Mac). It's free and it doesn't have any HTTPS restrictions or anything like that. It just requires some setup on your computer but there are plenty of guides that will walk you through the process if you're not already a nerd (like me!).
