tethering with verizon

Wait, someone's wanting to tether their mobile connection through their entire house?

Wow.. especially with the online gaming, good luck with that.

Never gave me an issue, played Modern Warfare 2 without a glitch for months of daily play. I only shared my laptop's connection from my cell phone with the PS3 though.

I've never needed an obscenely low ping for gaming online.

EDIT: Correction, I played EQ2 for a while and the latency was unbearable at times. That was even on FiOS, so it isn't always on your end.

The fact that they can get away with charging 15-20 bucks for this in the first place just pisses me off. I'm already paying 30 a month for data, which is almost as much as I pay for my home wired Internet connection. They want me to pay more than that for a slow 3G connection that I will only use on my computer periodically? Screw these companies and their ridiculous money sucking tactics. I'll keep tethering for free until they find a way to stop me.
^agreed.

here is what i use;

i would think a home internet would be better for gaming/and faster then a tethered 3g.

It had better be. I'm just saying it isn't always terrible. I wouldn't want to make a habit of it, but if you need to lay the smack down on someone while you're on your laptop away from home, it isn't so slow that it ruins it or anything.

I cant understand why there is no unlimited plan for the 3g hotspot/ tethering. I remember when I had an old data card with alltel, It work great plus it had an unlimited plan. Now its capped at 2gbs, that's very low in my opinion. I would pay for an unlimtied plan for the hotspot. or Some type of real full unlimited plan for both phone and hotspot as one plan. You cant do a whole lot with 2gbs. all you can do is surf the internet from time to time. you cant download anything or upload anything really with out going over. and getting charged alot for it.

I have a Verizon broadband aircard for my laptop and I won't trade it for anything else. This allows me to get on the internet from my laptop anywhere with Verizon service, and I don't have to depend on any free WiFi which in my humble opinion is not safe.

Now, I know all carriers provide the USB version also, but from what I have heard, the USB version is not as fast as the PC card version. So doesn't the same thing apply to tethering when you are connecting to the USB port? If it is true, and if we are paying extra for tethering anyway, shouldn't we all get the aircard instead? I always leave my aircard on my laptop as it is thin and not obstructive, so there is no messing around with any USB wiring. I can jump on the internet in 3 seconds.

Any thought on that?

agreed....^
im too broke to pay 60 a month for the air card though.
so i pay 30 a month for a phone and tether without verizon knowing it, against their rules, and without paying them for it.

but def. i agree with you, no way in the world im paying for internet on my phone + a tethering fee. if i were to do that, id just ditch the phone and get an air card.

i dont like caps, so i dont pay for services i dont agree with the terms on.
im like you, not gonna pay them too much, not gonna pay them for a service that doesnt meet what i want. 2g is not enough for me to pay for, so im not using their service. (assuming the cap is 2g as you say). i wouldnt even consider it until they put it at unlimited with a price im willing to pay.

depending on your morals, i believe i saw somewhere you can hack a phone and use the 3g hotspot without paying them.

I dont think you use the hotspot feature or tethering feature some phones have built in. I think its a market app you get, and I also think you need to be rooted to do so.

^im unrooted and tethering to my mini 9 with easy tether right now.

And that's the way it should be, if you don't like what is offered then don't get it or use it. However, that is quite different than if you don't like what is offered then take it without paying for it.

^that is a good point. theft is a bad thing.
i have to admit though that im not gonna feel real bad for tethering my laptop to my phone and not giving verizon the extra money to do it....

I had to read this twice... ha, I thought you said you WERE going to feel bad. Blah, yeah right!!!

Please correct me if I am wrong, but the 3G connection through mobile internet provider like VzW or AT&T Mobility is not at par with the high speed internet connection at home through TimeWarner or AT&T U-verse. The mid-level account (price-wise) with those "wired" providers can easily give you about 12-15 Mbps download speed. In this day and age, almost everyone I know has such high speed internet access at home.

Tethering is a good idea. But the practical usability might be limited. I certainly do not want to get on XBOX Live with tethering or I will die faster than I can respawn. :D

Thats wireless tethering on my rooted eris with 1 bar of 3g. I have seen it above 1.5 Mb/s with 4 bars.

I think the point is that if your a heavy internet user, it really wouldn't be a good idea to rely on a cell phone internet package.

I can't imagine downloading games via Steam where a game can be several GB. *shudder*

But if all you used it for was light browsing and email, I could see it being sufficient.
