Tethering

The new reviews of the Incredible mention that it has support for tethering via a "Mobile Broadband Connect" option. However the reviews didn't know if there was an extra cost service plan associated with this.

Can anyone in the know comment?

Are there other ways to tether. Things like pdanet or other. Is rooting required?

Yes, if you use the Broadband connect app you have to have tethering added to your plan.

PDAnet and other 3rd party apps do not require this.

Is PDAnet a free app? I highly doubt it.

it's free for 14 days full trial. after 14 days it's $25 one time.....HOWEVER, if you only need http access, you don't have to pay, it will continue to work. If you require access to https, then ya gotta pay up.

awesome, thanks guys. What if i go over 5gb/month, you guys think verizon will fine us.

There's no fine as with PDAnet you aren't paying for tethering. That's not to say that they can't terminate your service if they determine that your a illegally tethering.

To OFFICIALLY use tethering you need to spend the extra 15 dollars...

My understanding is Verizon is currently practicing a "don't ask don't tell" policy on the 29$ plan though. meaning there are apps that allow tethering and people use them all the time.

Be warned this may change in the future as more people use 3g phones and Verizon's network sees more traffic.

I use a 3rd party app on my i760 (WinMo) to tether my laptop and it works fine...

Exactly. 3rd party tethering works fine. It's just against VZW's ToS. So if they decided to, they can terminate your service.

I pay for tethering on Verizon, do they not have VZaccess for this working? In other words is there a legit software client through Verizon?

Yeah, Basically, if your like me and use tethering MAYBE once every 6 months and not much even then, I would just grab a 3rd party app to do it...

If you planning on tethering a LOT(like everyday and transferring 100 mb's or GB's of info) I would probably spend the extra to get the "official" plan...

The PDAnet does it only give you HTTP and HTTPS or is it full on tethering internet access like the $15 a month stuff from verizon.

The free version of PDAnet gives you access to HTTP sites. To get access to HTTPS, you have to pay for PDAnet.

Umm thanks but that didn't answer my question, even wit hthe pay version do I get more then just web browsing?

Telnet, RDP, POP, SMTP, etc full internet tethering?

All of the solutions mentioned here are USB tethering, right? Are there any mobile hotspot tethering solutions that don't require rooting? Which ones, if any, are legal (with the tethering plan)? I'd really like to have a mobile hotspot capability, but I haven't heard whether Verizon will support this outside of their MiFi device.

Thanks

To update those that are considering "tethering" I just tried my i760 today...

I NO LONGER have access, it directs me to a VZW site offering to upgrade my plan...

I don't know the differences between how tethering works on WinMo and how it works on a Android... This may not impact Android right now.

BUT it is clear Verizon IS starting to care about tethering...

This may mean problems in the future for Android tethering:(

You need root though.

Tether has a beta for Android, no word on a release date yet though. I use it for my blackberry, you can connect either with USB or Bluetooth. Works great!

I'm hoping I can switch my blackberry account to the Incredible when I get it (they will let you switch between blackberry phones, but haven't said what their policy will be going from BB to Android).

interesting.
I've tetherd before on my current HTC so I'll be keeping an eye on this to see how I can do the same with the Incredible
note to self: pdanet works but is $25

any other recommendations?

It's only $25 if you need access to HTTPS sites.

Another satisfied Tether user here also looking forward to their decision on how to handle BB -> Android conversions.
