Text alert help

Lurker
I am new to smartphones. My question is simple, how can I set a downloaded ringtone as a text alert? I can set it as a regular ringtone, but it is not an option for text alerts. I apologize if this is a dumb question.

Hi and welcome to Android Forums. :D

Don't worry there's no dumb questions or answers here at AF, but only the questions not answered. ;)
You should find the option by going to Settings > Sound > and Notification.
Let me know how it goes. :)

Depends on your phone. However 3rd party SMS apps like Go SMS Pro has an option to use any mp3 file on your phone as an SMS alert.

If you don't already have it, make a folder called notifications on your SD card & put message tones in there.

Also make a folder called alarms, ringtones...

Now I am new to android and smart phones and in fact the first time it rang I had to work out how to answer it. I note the comment about opening a folder. Where and how and how do you direct your phone to it? My phone (Huawei X3) just beeps the selected tone once for texts and alerts and unless you are standing next to it you miss it. My old Nokia played the entire ringtone till you checked it.
