Help Text alerts - not getting them!

Hi

Can someone tell me how to get my s3 to make the chosen sound when I get a text? It is driving me mad hat it doesn't make noise or even vibrate...now I'm prepared to accept that i am a dinosaur with these things but my 12 year old cant work it out!

Any help gratefully received

open messages, then settings (bottom left touch key) , scroll down to notification settings and tick notifications and choose ringtone.

Also make sure Notifications are turned on! if you have the grey arrow in the top left, they are off. just pull down notifications and swype right to left till you see the button and tap it.
