Text app question

Is there a text messenger app that let's others know if my text was read or if their text was read. Sort of like imessenger for iPhones?

The thing you need to understand is that iMessage between 2 iPhones is more like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger than text message. It's integrated with SMS in one app, but between 2 iMessage users it is actually Internet messaging rather than text. Hangouts is the obvious analogy in Android, but I don't use that myself so cannot comment.

You can request delivery reports with SMS (some carriers charge for these though), but those only tell you whether it was delivered, not read. That's because they are generated by the network rather than the phone, and the network has finished with the message when it delivers it.

If you want this in a pure SMS app what you would need is for the app to send a message to the sender when you read their message. Obviously that would interrupt conversation, as well as incurring charges for many people. You could work around the breaking up the conversation with a special SMS which the app would know to interpret as a "read receipt" and not display in the conversation, but that would only work properly if both use the same app (and still incur charges). I'm not aware of an SMS app that does this.
