Help text message notifications not obvious

Anyone else noticed this? I'm constantly not noticing when I get text messages...

The notification icon on the top status bar Will go away before I ever see the message. Is there a way to make a "1" show up on the text icon if you have one unread message?

You can asign a ring tone that will notify you of a message.you fan also asign ring tone to certain people in your phone director. They can be found in settings

HTC Customer service called me the other day to see how I was going with my One X and I mentioned this to the rep. They said I needed to do a hard reset. I told him that I was not going to do that as I would loose all my stuff. Seemed to me like he didn't know about this bug. argh
