I received a text message from someone in my contact list. I do not have a Droid but this person has the HTC Hero. This person stated the message was not from them. Is that possible? Could I have received a message on my non-smart phone from a stranger that showed it was from a person in my contact list?

It's possible, but not likely. For that to happen, unless it's a random SMS error, the person sending would need to know how to spoof some else's number and also know the number in your contacts list to spoof. It's much more likely that someone got a hold of the phone, sent you the message and then deleted it from the sent logs so the owner of the phone wouldn't realize it.
