Text message text input problem

When I receive a text and try to reply I cannot enter into qwerty when I turn phone on side. I'm using Handcent, but not sure if i'm receiving on Handcent. It only happens when I first, initially, get the text notification.

Are you talking actually in the program or using the popup. If using the pop-up, probably won't be able to get it in landscape and will have to use t9 or however you have your keyboard set.
