I just got a GS5 the other day and I'm liking it so far but I'm having an issue with my facebook contact photos appearing as text message avatars. My google account has linked to all relevant facebook friends and their pictures appear next to their names in my contact list.

The pictures also pop up when someone calls me. But all of my text message avatars are the generic gray person. I have tried to make the facebook account the default for the caller id but it still does not work.

The way only when I can get the text message avatars to show a pictures is if I manually assigned a photo to the contact. My GS3 would automatically update my contact photos that were linked the facebook accounts and use those photos for all things involving the contacts, I can't figure out why the GS5 does that for everything but the text message avatar. Please help

I haven't used the stock messaging app, but I can confirm that the proper avatars do show up automatically in Google Hangouts (which serves as my messaging app).

So maybe it's a Samsung software issue? Maybe try Hangouts and confirm that it works there.

Just saw this. I use Handcent as mine, but I have hangouts to talk with my daughter on her ipad. how does this work for you? I imagine you wouldn't use it if you didn't like it, but any gripes?

Works great.

I only need a basic SMS/MMS app. I was worried that using Hangouts would force me load up and wade through superfluous features.

Nope. Hangouts seems relatively lightweight, and it works great as a basic texting (and MMS) app. If I didn't know better, I'd think that's all that it does (texting).
