The text messaging app that comes with the phone doesn't have that option because it uses sms to send the text, unlike WhatsApp witch uses data and can see if message was read. Apparently iPhone combines sms and data to see if other iPhone users read the text.
In short you can't, unless both you and the recipient have an app that allows it
