Text notifications/Hangout notifications

Hi there,

I'm a relative Android newbie so apologies if this is a silly question. I am a bit confused about my text notifications. Every time I shut my phone off (I do most every night), the next time I turn it on, I get notified of all the texts and hangout messages from the previous day. It's pretty confusing and I have no idea how to fix this. Is it a bug or something I can change via settings?

I have an LG optimus pro G, running software updated 1/12/14.

I don't have your same model of phone but I ran into a similar problem with my LG OPTIMUS F7. To resolve the problem I downloaded an app called FLOATING NOTIFICATIONS from the play store. I then enabled it in settings/accessibility, opened the app settings, then ticked hangouts and SMS. I stopped getting flooded with notifications after doing this. If you like the app, you can also put a check box next to any app that you receive notifs from and you will get a balloon with the app icon inside of it and a box under it reading out the notification. You can either click the FN once to be taken directly to the app delivering the notif, or you can leave it go and it will doc itself cleanly in the corner of your phone until you are ready to deal with it.
