Text notifications.. need help

Ugh. This is my first foray into an android phone and I really dig it.. however, there is currently 1 fatal flaw that if I can't fix, is going to force me to go back to the iPhone.

I need to know when I get a text.

Right now I don't.

The iPhone would plater a badge on my screen that was impossible to miss.
Now, I just get a little bubble at the top of my scree that I often miss.

Recommendations for you experts?

Different app?
Settings I'm missing?

There are a couple of 3rd Party apps that might do it - Light Flow or SMS Popup. You might also take a look at Floating Notifications?

Not sure if there are options in the stock app to make notifications more noticeable, but you could also investigate some of the 3rd Party SMS apps, handcent, chomp, sliding messaging?

Go sms does this and dozens of other customizations. And it's free!

I use the "pop up" option on Go Sms and it displays the first few lines of the sms right on top of whatever youre doing, lets you read, reply or hide it, you cant miss it
dont go back to iOs, you have plenty of freedom on android to change almost anything you dont like and make it default
