Help Text notifications not working after 4.3 update

My husband and I both have Samsung Galaxy sIII phones - I accepted the upgrade a few weeks ago and have had relatively few problems. My husband got the upgrade yesterday (he said he had no choice, it just started downloading, not sure if that's true, but whatever) and ever since then, he gets no SOUND text notifications. He gets the notification on the status bar, but no sound. The sound works everywhere else. The settings on the volume haven't changed, they are all up as high as they can go. Notifications for email work just fine. I've done some research with others who have had similar problems, but haven't found any resolution. I've disabled Hangouts on his phone. He's so frustrated that he just wants to run his phone over with his car. I'm trying to avoid this, as we still have a year left on the contracts with Verizon

Everyone who gets bugs (which is almost everyone who accepts the update) gets different bugs.

He can try different SMS apps (Go SMS Pro, Handcent, etc.) to see if one of them works, until they issue a fix for the "fix" that was supposed to be the update.

He has GoSMS - I can't get the audible notifications on either the stock messaging or GoSMS.

Sometimes the available notification sounds are added/removed from the options in system updates. Has he checked to make sure the correct sound is still set up on the app? It might be as simple as re-selecting the sound he wants.

Svensett, yes, he's tried several different types of sounds - stock and downloaded. None of them work for text anymore.

Did you do a factory reset after the upgrade? Many posts on this forum advise to do this after a firmware upgrade.

Nope. He'll run over the phone with his car before he does a factory reset.

Make sure he has Insurance on the phone first, but a Factory Reset is usually recommended.

Thanks. He does have insurance. I was hoping to find a solution for him OTHER than factory reset, since he refuses to do that.
