text notifications while on phone

Hi all my old phones have always given a beep or some sort in my blue tooth headset when I am on the phone, when I get a text message, or an e-mail. I have Droid X now and all it does if flash the light when I get an notification. Well I leave my phone 50% of the time on my hip. So I don't know that I got a text message, when I am on the phone. Any way of running an app, or a setting that will do this.

There should be a way to turn on notification sounds in the settings, an app is not required for this.
