Why can't my husband who has a regular cell phone (not an android or Iphone) receive my text messages ? When I send him a message all he gets on his end are boxes. Is it my phone or his ?

It depends on what phone he has. The make and model of his phone, and who both of your carriers are, MAY give us enough of a clue to give you some kind of answer. Normally that problem occurs between computers when they're set up for different character sets (like Latin and Cyrillic).
