Text Tones

When I ask most people if a phone has text tones, they never know what I'm talking about and I find it really weird. On older phones I could have a different text tone for each friend; along with a seperate ringtone, so why I'm unable to have this option on newer so called "smart phones," is beyond me. Anyways, I just got the Epic a few days ago and its taking time to get use to, but now I'm wondering if I can make ringtones into also text tones? I would really appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Check out "Ringdroid" from the market. You can use it to create ringtone, alarm tones and notification (text message etc) tones.

I just got my first Droid as well (Motorola Droid Pro). The Ringdroid App will let you make ringtones/download them, but thats not really the problem/question the OP was asking.

Like the OP said, on previous phones ive had (last was a BB Tour) I could set something like this:
Default Ringtone - Song A
Contact 1 Ringtone - Song B
Contact 1 Text tone - Song C

So even before looking, you know who is txting or calling you because each contact could have their own individual ringtone and text alert.

On my Droid I can go into my contacts and open one up. From there I can select a ringtone for that specific contact, but theres no option for a txt tone.

So are we missing something or can you not designate txting tones for contacts on Android phones?

To the best of my knowledge Android does not let you define a specific ringtone for a SMS message sent to an individual in your contact list. To do so would probably require a third party app like Ringo Lite...

Ringo Lite - Ringtones Manager - Android app on AppBrain

Ok ill have to check it out. Thanks :)

On my BB Tour, LG Voyager, LG V they all came standard being able to assign txt tones to contacts without any apps. The OP had the Palm and she could do that same on that as well.

Just installed that app and seems like it will do exactly what we were asking.

But another question, should the SMS tone turn off after pushing a button or hitting the screen? On all phones I've had the tone would just stop once I hit a button. So far its kinda seeming like the SMS tone is playing the entire song before stopping. Is that how it works?

When you specify a song as a ringtone it has no idea how much of the song to play or where to start in the music file. Use Ringdroid to edit the song and create an appropriately sized ringtone which can be saved in the ringtones directory for future use.

Epic text ringtone: took me hrs to figure this out...use Myxer, download your ringtone then where it says ringtone with a ck mark push that, up pops other ways to save, save as notification, then, go to home screen, press messages, then settings, go to set ringtone! Good luck :)
