Assuming you never had an iPhone, they send you an iMessage. It usually works. (iMesage isn't SMS, regardless of Apple's refusal to admit it, so it sometimes doesn't work.)
If you used to have an iPhone, you'll need to connect an iPhone to that number again and remove the number from iMessage.
