Help Texting from another country

My wife is visiting her sister in Canada. We live in the UK. She emailed me last night to tell me that she is unable to send or receive texts on her Nexus 4. Before she left I disabled data roaming and mobile data. My understanding is that she should be able to use the Nexus 4 to make and receive calls and texts without using data.

Any advice please.

She should be able to send & receive regular texts (SMS), but pictures (MMS) needs Data.

Unless their plan doesn't have international call/text or Canada isn't included for whatever reason.

Sounds like it could be a carrier issue. Perhaps your carrier doesn't have agreements with the correct carrier in Canada for where she is located.

If she's near wifi often, I would give Viber a shot. Free international texting to anybody with an internet connection. Or Google Hangouts.
