Texting Issue

I have the Samsung Captivate and I love it. I replaced my iphone with it, and was pretty hesitant to switch, but after making the switch I'm glad I did. However I've come across a problem, I hope it can be fixed easily. I accidently sent a text message to somebody without putting the area code first, then got the text back saying that the number was invalid. Okay so I deleted the original text and resent the text to the same number, this time including the area code. No big deal. But NOW, when I get a text back from this same number, it switches back to the original number I had put in and drops the area code, it won't let me reply to this number unless I delete the thread of messages and start a whole new convo. this is rather annoying, does anybody know how I can get around this?
