When creating a text on the Samsung Note 4, the keyboard gets in the way of the text area and you can't see if you misspelled a word. How do you get it out of the way?

When creating a text on the Samsung Note 4, the keyboard gets in the way of the text. How do you get it out of the way?
Touching the back button will make the keyboard disappear, but of course that only works after you've finished typing.
The keyboard should not cover the input area though. Something is wrong there. Maybe try a different text message app (plenty in the Play Store - I use Chomp or Textra myself).
