Texts sending as MMS

The maximum size of SMS text messages is 160 characters... make sure you keep your messages below that limit and it will always go as an sms message... some messaging apps on some phones will 'helpfully' convert them to MMS messages once they go beyond that size. It didn't used to make a difference, but Three charge quite heavily for those... and they aren't included in the bundle. There is probably a setting you can tweak in your messaging app to stop this happening.

They charge 30p a message as I just found out, my old phone HTC one m7 sent plenty large SMS messages but since moving to the S7E I have been charged, maybe time for new app, any suggestions.

It may have sent them as concatenated sms messages... instead of converting them to MMS. Check the settings in your messaging app to see if you can turn that feature off.

^this.

Check your message app's settings. If it isn't clear that you can stop it sending long texts as MMS, install a different app which does (my favourites are Textra and Chomp, but there are many that will let you explicitly set this), though I'd be a bit surprised if the stock message app's settings don't let you control this.

Also pay attention to some emoticons because they can change the formatting.

If your text is 135 characters then you add a single emoticon that can bump it to over 160 characters and turn it into an MMS. Changing the settings as mentioned above would prevent this.

The problem isn't the 160 character limit. Current phones can go beyond that now, sending long SMS as multipart messages which the recipient phone recognizes and rebuilds as one. The issue is that Samsung's Messaging app can only do 3 part long SMS before it converts to MMS. Other SMS apps or the stock app on some other manufacturers can do more. I've sent a 23 part SMS using chompSMS before.

Curious to see the phrase "look at your cell phone bill" in an article on a UK website discussing UK phone bills, since precisely nobody in the UK would call it that (you'd always say "mobile" - calling it a "cell" is like writing about walking on the "sidewalk" or the "trunk" of a car).

Well a warning does pop up that the message is being converted to MMS, so you can't say it's Samsung's fault either. It's not their fault you ignore it.

Just tested it with stock app and never got a warning......
That's weird. I get this :
