Just some friendly advice: once you're rooted, make SURE you do a nandroid backup before doing anything fancy! Nandroid Backups can save you from a wrecked day: I can't count the threads I've seen with

"HELP! I deleted something and now the phone doesn't work!"

The nandroid will let you rest easy... if something goes horribly wrong, just wipe everything and restore the nandroid. It'll be like nothing ever happened.
