Thanks to the iP5, wife now wants an S3. Thank u Apple

I still fail to understand why so many people don't recognize many things that the iPhone has going for it.

I would bet that fewer 1st time smart phone users are unhappy with their iPhone than those who go Google. Seriously, for the average user how many of you have really heard of many uphappy iPhoners? I have had 5 androids now, and I still recommend the iPhone for those who want an intuitive, no-muss, no-fuss phone, and don't even want to start with any customizations.

Thanks for the "welcome" ryancalif:

The comments I inserted in my introductory post are pretty much in agreement with yours:

Those comments follow:
I own both Apple and PC's (including an iPad), but have more of an affinity to the open nature of the Windows environment. In fact, I have built two PC's from the case up, so am more of a techie than the average turn-it-on-it-just-works Apple user.
Because of this, I dread the iTunes syncing experience, the inherent lack of control et al.....

I hope to find some good information here.....Cheers,

Several years ago, when iPhone presented me with the ability to easily surf the net in my hand, I was hooked. However, times change and technology changes, so until recently, I thought I was stuck with the iPhone. But I am NOT hooked to, or sold-on any ONE technology for any longer than I need to be. I try to obtain what is best for MY uses and needs -- fully knowing that this will change.

I use a Mac mini in my audio room connected to a USB DAC. I purchased the iPad to primarily use for a Mac mini's remote. On the other hand, with 39,000 digital tracks at my instant disposal, I also spin vinyl. So, I'm a back-to-the-future sort of old guy.

The Mac mini / iPad combo (as is said) just works. However, I load my external hard drive with Apple readable .AIF files from my Windows PC. And perform CODEC modifications (WAV to FLAC to MP3 to AIFF) via my Windows PC using dBpoweramp.

I only use the mac mini as a music player. I never rip with it, I rarely surf with it, and I never use it to read e-mails. And I never let iTunes "organize" my music, which it so very much wants to do -- control everything. So, therein lies the rub. I have a love/hate relationship with Apple -- i.e. it just works, verses I want to do, what I want to do, when I want to do it.

I had a very hard time trying to convince myself it was the right thing to do, having owned so much media purchased on itunes (90% of which was unusable with the SG3 due to Apple's ridiculous DRM)

I personally had the same issue and felt that it was perfectly acceptable to "pirate" the content that I had previously bought. You can prove in court easily that you had purchased it, so it's not anything to worry about IMO.

I can certainly recognize the pluses of iOS. I came from a 3GS before moving to Android and was pretty happy with it. It did lots of cool things for sure. Now though in a post Ice Cream Sandwich market I don't think iOS has much advantage over Android. Their iCloud and iTunes match are pretty badass. Their apps aren't really better anymore, but in general that argument could have been made in the past for sure. I like to be able to customize and access the file system and really do whatever I want with MY device, so I don't see myself going back anytime soon.

What i recognize about the iphone is that it is just hype. All the smart phones whether it's Windows or Android are on par with each other and it's just individual preference.

There is a difference between buying an iphone out of ignorance of other products capabilities and buying an iphone because it actually fits your needs. Most iphone purchasers are the former.
Apple is akin to communism. You have no choices, you are locked behind this sandboxed wall and they use hype and propaganda to keep you from waking up from their matrix. I am not saying their products aren't made well (for the most part) and don't work well, cause they do, but the iphone is far from the best phone in the market.

P.S. There are many unhappy Apple consumers. Between the light leaks of ipads, scratches and dings on iphone 5's to the issues with Apple TV's and MBP's. Just look to Macrumors. And I own 3 ATV's (that lose the wifi connection every few days requiring a restart), all of my ipad 2's had various degrees of light leaks, and trying to beat Apple at the jailbreaking game and dealing with itunes just became an exercise in futility. I came to dispise Apple for telling me what I could or couldn't do.

I have absolutely no problems with my iP5. No scratches, no scuffs, no wifi issues, no screen issues, no battery issues. Absolutely flawless. Best phone I have owned by far. Much better than my razr maxx. No problems with my ATV3, ipad 2 or iMac. The problems are way overblown. I know several people who got the iphone 5. None of them have any of the problems either. Apple is solid, and that's why they are the best.

I'm sure it has lots of things going for it but there is one issue there is no getting away from - cost. An Iphone 5 in the UK will cost roughly

Covart, are you leaving her S3 alone or are you rooting it? The S3 with stock Jelly Bean is amazing(as you probably already know), it's the way this phone should come.

I did do a similar calculation and the conlusion was, that for the price of a 64GB i5 at 699GBP I can get an s3 for 430GBP, a 64GB uSD card for 50GBP and a compact camera, that will still be 100x better than iPhone's and still have a bit of cash left for other accessories.

Prices taken from official distributors.

Nah, I rooted her S3, but left everything else stock, minus att crapware. She likes things simple and not in to customizing her phone very much. In fact, her priority was to get a sparkly, diamond encrusted looking case for it, before I could do anything else to it. :) She is the definition of 'girly' if there ever was one. And she has been extremely happy with the S3. I was a little worried, since she has always been an iphone nut.

But I will wait for a stable release of the official JB code, not aosp or cm10, before moving to Jelly Bean. Plus, I have Google Wallet loaded and use everyday, so I have to be a bit more cautious. I know cm10 has gwallet supported, but after using cm9 and dealing with nightlies, I prefer to just wait.

I guess the smart thing to do would be to buy them and stick them on Ebay then!
Smart thing to do, is go to Canada or Australia and buy i9300 int'l versions (since both countries belong to the commonwealth and the prices are nearly half the cost as in the UK), then sell them for 50 quid under phonewarehouse or comet/argos prices in England. Not that I 1ould ever condone such a think. By the way, how much is petrol per litre now?

The reason why the US and Canada pay so much less than we is, I think, because they don't pay the punitive VAT tax rates we do. I'm sure that if the UK Customs caught you bringing a GS3 into the country and not declaring it then they would have strong words with you in a room with no windows.

The US has State tax that is applied to all consumer goods bought in the State you are in at the time. VAT is excessively high because the nations in Europe apply so much of their economies coffers to social welfare and free medical care. You really think your road tax goes to fixing roads, or that petrol costs 2 quid a litre or that those making over 125k quid should be taxed 50% of their income by the British government?
Anyway, terminal 5 customs at Heathrow is a joke to walk in and out of. If you buy a phone in the States or a computer, they have no way of knowing when or where you bought it. I have never once been stopped by customs for inspection, except once when I arrived in Bahrain. That was in the 90's though.

So how come things are so much cheaper over there? Our VAT is 20% and the government recently wanted to apply this to hot Pasties (like a pie) but the public outcry forced them to do a U-turn.

There are so many reasons for things being cheaper in the US, ranging from Saudi forcing OPEC to valuate oil based on the USD, to less social programs, to the US having more money than the UK in circulation and printing more than is destroyed, to individual taxation by US States of consumer goods and its citizens, to the US debt ratio, to how many oil refineries we have up and functional... and so on.

The big one in my eye though is that taxation rates are raised for socialism in Euro countries, but there is no longer any way to raise the coffers without either raising VAT or forcing people to take less money in retirement and what til they are older to retire. The best solution is the one that no one wants, because it is too hard. If US citizens were forced to pay 20% State Tax on all goods, plus pay $10.00 a gallon for petrol like you do, there would be rioting and mass marches on the capital.
