The Afterlife

I'll be getting a new phone soon and would like turn my Sprint HTC Hero into a dedicated mp3 player. The Hero is currently rooted (thank you androidforums) and running Gingerbread w/o issue. Are there any custom ROMS to turn your old phone into a dedicated mp3/media player? Ideally I'd just want a mp3 player and the ability to use wifi and still use the market. I currently use pandora, tune-in radio and beyond pod as well as a 32Gb m-SD for my music fix. Also are there any players from the market that are better then the stock G-Bread one?

Thanks.

Hmm why would you bother? I suppose your new phone will be capable of all the same right? If you're really about the music and concerned about battery times the investment in an more player is worth every cent. I'd find it very inconvenient to carry a second phone myself...

But anyway, there's enough discussion on media players for Android on this forum. I recall power amp by heart, but there are some others that are well advocated. Good luck!

Set it to airplane mode. You can still use WiFi while in Airplane mode.

Yes, this is the best way to do it. Turn on airplane mode (which turns off all of the antennas) and then manually turn on WiFi. Then get whatever is the best music player for you (this isn't an area of expertise for me).

This is how my retired phones are set up. My Droid 2 is for my 4yr old to play games and watch netflix on. My D1 is my alarm clock (hey, I still have the dock and it works well for this).

I don't think you'll find any Roms / Hacks that completely disable the phone capabilities as I believe it is illegal to disable a communication device from making emergency calls.

I hope this helps.

The idea is to have a non-a@*#^ mp3 player that I would not have to worry about like I would have to w/ my phone. Thanks for the tips. Now on to searching for my new phone.
