The age old question(s)...

Sacrimony

Lurker
Hey everyone,

The some people may frown upon this as it's probably been asked over and over again, I hope some of you will read it :)

I have a SGS2 and I'm just about getting to grips all over again with the Android OS. Why I ever got on the iOS train is beyond me (shudders). I'm running the latest version of ICS with ZDBox (to clear the system cache and use it's Power Saving option), Startup Cleaner 2.0 (which I have disabled a few services with), Juice Defender and I've also disabled some services and apps with the stock application manager.

My question to the people who know what they're doing (you guys!) is.. Am I running too many apps to take care of task killing, start up service disabling, Power Saving mode and battery saving?

I have Juice Defender set to balanced, but it's too early to say whether it's doing anything.

My apologies for this long and drawn out post, it's just that I've almost gone past the point of no return with settings. If I dive any deeper I will probably end up bricking the phone, somehow engaging in a constant video call to someone in Australia and... well, who knows what else :P Slight exaggeration.

Many thanks for any replies in advance, I really appreciate any time a person takes to help out.

Regards,

Sam

Most of those things you're running can do more bad than good. If you want to save battery either turn down screen brightness and turn off Data when you dont need or just switch on Power Saving Mode, you can customise it in Settings.

I have found that rooting ones device will give you the best options for power saving, you have more control over your phone allowing you to under clock and change governors depending on the rom also you can quickly change brightness in some roms simply by sliding your finger across the status bar

You don't need a Task Killer for Android, it handles it perfectly itself.

JuiceDefender is good though as it doesn't kill tasks but turns of certain things at certain times to save battery.

In short just let Android handle all of this.

To understand Android a little better you need to understand that it runs better when it is using up more memory, this is just how android works. The more memory you are using the better the android OS handles requests, when you kill those apps with a task killer, android has to go through the process of starting the app up again, because the OS will notice there is all this free memory it could be using, so it will start up apps to take it up, making for a better experience for you, and leaving the apps running is much better than continually killing them and making android start them back up.

Hey guys!

Wow, I'm overwhelmed by your advice on this matter. It's really opened my eyes to a few things. I'll ditch the task killing apps for starters! To be honest I've been considering rooting my device for a few days now, although I'm not sure which would be the best ROM to go with. I tried out Cyanogen on my old Hero G3 and it worked a treat, especially being able to under and overclock the system. And, there's always Titanium Back Up isnt there!

Many thanks for your help guys, I really appreciate it!
