The app called Tether

SeekerOfTheWay

Android Enthusiast
This always seems to get confused. There is an app called "Tether" that I used on my BlackBerry for a year. Worked great.

The app is available for Android in the Market for $30. I tried getting the free trial but I can't seem to download the app to my phone. I use the Tether.com instructions and links but the link to get the free trial doesn't appear to work.

Has anyone been able to try Tether for free? Is anyone using the app called Tether? I'm not interested so much in the other tether apps. I have had great experiences with the app called Tether and I would buy it for Android if I knew it worked.

Thanks for any insight.

I dunno what this app does that's so special it warrants $30, but i do know that there are loads of other free tethering apps on the market.

It works well. I suppose If I can't get it to download I'll use another. But I like staying with services that have worked for me in the past. Tether doesn't seem to have a lot of downloads in the Android market. They are the only option on BlackBerry, or at least they were.

I'd suggest using one of the more utilized tethering apps. YMMV but I can't see paying $30 for a tethering app. Wireless Tether is probably one of the more common ones but, IIRC, it requires root.

Might be worth giving widgetsoid a try. It's an extended control panel widget, but it also has builtin controls for both usb (wired) tethering and wireless tethering (portable hotspot), and i think they both work without root.

You NEED root access to use wifi tether on android phones. If you have root access, apps are free to do this. If you don't have root access, you need to pay your carrier for tethering.

Are you sure about that? I thought Froyo had it builtin - some carrier locked phones may have taken it out again - but by default Froyo onwards has wifi tethering without root.

I may be wrong, been so long since i had an unrooted phone.

Most, if not all, major carriers have blocked this, since they found out they can charge people 30 dollars a month for it.

I tried Easy Tether. That doesn't require root. It's not wifi though, usb cable tethering.

Yes, that doesn't require root as its wired tethering.

Not all of us are in that boat though (there's a bit more of a free market outside the US) and so we dont necessarily need root to do tethering. Your previous post made it sound like a universal requirement.
