The cost of gas

I don't think that was it's primary objective, do you?
I do, yes. These same countries give tax incentives to low co2 emission vehicles (read: tax penalties to gas guzzlers). These are also the same countries that sell cars that easily get 60+mpg.

The government here taxes cars based on emissions :) excellent ideaand much fairer the basing it on the liter size of the engine

Well, it's good we at this point still live in the USA where not only the rich drive the nice vehicles. Though I fear we are at a turning point with our liberties. Then again, many don't seem to mind the loss of their liberties....

What cars get 60 mpg btw?

we should just create a law banning all forms of transportation other than rickshaws

this will keep the whiney alarmists quiet about the pollution......... and it will solve the unemployment problems

A traffic jam of rickshaws in New York City would be quite a sight. Will they get horns?

Come on guys. A bit of quick math later and I see UK citizens are currently paying $10.35 per gallon. And it goes up weekly.

:(

Even better would be if those alarmist just stopped using cars and let the rest of us do what we want. That way every one wins...but it's not really about that is it? It's about one part of the population dictating what the others can and can't do.

Look up any car company in the UK, as an example. VW has one, Fiat has one, Ford has one, there are many. I wouldn't consider any of them bad cars. One does not need 200+ hp to get the job done. It is certainly possible that your definition of nice differs from mine.

When it's about damaging the planet and the economy left for the future generation(s), you can bet it is all about that.

People here in the States don't necessarily want those models. It's a cultural thing I think. You go to Europe and everybody drives these compacts and sub-compacts. Here in the States you see large 4 door sedans, pickups and mini vans.

Yeah but do you need them? Only farmers and people too loose with money have them here like

It's not lifestyle, it's economics. Gas in Europe is about double the cost of gas in the US. When gas prices go up, so do sales of smaller, more efficient cars.

Ah yes, diesels. I love diesel. They're soooo much less pollutant then gasoline. For me a nice vehicle is one I fit in. I'm 6'2" ~210lbs. I have a wife a kid and one on the way. IOW a prius is not a nice car. What I drive now is a diesel. I love diesel, did I say that? At 6000lbs it's doing dam fine with it's 20mph. Did I mention it puts out around 360hp and upwards 400ft/lbs of torque? That's because I pull trailers. Now how is it fair that my choice is not affordable because some one decides it's "too pollutant".

Well since we are one that vibe. Do you think we should ban smoking and Twinkies? Should we make efficiency standards for houses and tear down those that don't meet those standards? Where does it end? Your proposal is kinda selfish don't you think?

So far it seems that the effort to save the planet is killing it faster. I mean light bulbs with mercury and cars with sulfuric acid and lead that fill up from the grid powered by nuclear energy?

It's not hard to see it's not about saving the planet. It's about money like it always is. The way you get the public to buy into it is by giving the public the warm fuzzies...

How about we tell people that can own only one phone in 5 years...because phones are highly pollutant as we all know. Or better yet, lets charge companies like apple, htc, hp, samsung a fee for each gadget they make to cover the cost disposing that device when it's owner upgrades? What would that do to the price of electronics?

Its not so far fetched..In Canada the consumer is charged a hazardous waste fee on lots of items including anything that uses a battery
