The forums are saying no ICS for Captivate

The Captivate is damn near a year and a half old. Why should it get ICS, when I doubt sincerely if it'll even support it?

My Captivate (not Rogers, eh?) has been running GB for months using Apex. But I digress. The bottom line is that Samsung sucks when it comes to updates and tech support. They excel when it comes to unfulfilled promises and stonewalling.

It sounds like not only Samsung sucks at updates, but it sounds like AT&T is even worse than Rogers when it comes to updates.......eh?

>>> Meh the combination of samsung and att almost requires you to have rom and root your phones which is quite sad.

= = =

I've got my phone so souped-up and stable that I have no urge to get a newer device. I was in an AT&T store this weekend and compared the speed of my phone to the S2. Granted, the S2 was stock but I couldn't tell any difference in responsiveness. Would I like a tad bigger screen...eh? Yes, but not enough to shell out $150 to $200 dollars.

The upcoming Galaxy Note with a 1.4GHz dual core processor and a 5.3" display sure looks interesting. A big boy phone or a small boy tablet. Either way, stuffing it in my pocket may elicit some attention from the fairer sex. Or the not-so-fairer sex.

Jack you're still here huh? You a Mod yet? I agree with you about the souped up cappy, mine is still running perfect after flashing it at least a hundred times and wasting countless hours of my life, but my phone has been happily rested on Darky Rom 10.2 Extreme Edition....the battery life is ridiculous and the phone is stable and a ROCKET. SO my wife who has always loved it....bribed me with the SGS2.....and I took the bait. I have to say at first I agreed with the fact that messing around in the store the speed didn't seem that unreal....but after getting this thing I HAVE to say.....this thing is savage. It never slows down....it is incredible, and the battery is untouchable yesterday I had 19 hours up and still had 57% left on the gauge with a pretty good amount of use. Engadget said they tested and played movies for nine hours on a full battery which I thought was strait bull$#!& but I am a believer now.

I will say though that the Captivates look and feel is still unmatched.....texting is sweet as the size of the device puts everything right where it needs to be...and although I have a new phone I can't help but feel my wife duped me.....Not a bit of buyers remorse but I can't help but feel that the Captivate is still every bit as relevant as ANY device out now. Stay strong brother.....make your wife steal yours by getting you a new Benz. C-ya

Still here from time to time. The good old days were more exciting, when some of us were posting stuff that was clearly mod bait - and then we wondered why the mods got involved in our threads. :)

Anyway, if I were driven to I'd seriously consider the S2 (along with the Note), especially since Serendipity 8 recently showed up over at XDA. You didn't do wrong. My post serves to self-justify my retention of the Captivate rather than to dis the S2.

The only reason i would ever drop the captivate for the sgs 2 is if i knew it would get ics in an timely manner. Knowing samsung it probably will be around march or april of next year for the sgs 2 getting ics.

I can roll with captivate and cm 7.1 for now

Well the SGS2 will definitely get ICS but it most likely wont be from Samsung....as soon as the I9100 gets it....Devs will be cranking ROMS out....and since the SGS2 is across all carriers, the amount of ICS options will be ridiculous. I am in NOOO hurry right now though, I will say for the Captivate ROMS OPTIMIZED what the phones was actually capable of.....with the SGS2 I can't see where more performance would even be needed or how you would possibly milk more out of it.

Still love that Captivate though...
..:)

I like the Captivate a lot actually. I'm running the stock GB build from Rogers (2.3.3) and it's very stable, performance and battery life is so much better than it was on FroYo, even stock.

This is a great phone, and because Rogers sucks, it'll be a while before I'll be upgrading, but I have no issue with that.

I'm debating an Atrix 2, personally. You'd have thought I learned my lesson after the first Atrix, but...they did update in a pretty timely manner, and stripped MotoBlur down to almost nothing so...maybe, just maybe.

In the meanwhile, been rocking CM7 on my Captivate forever. It's relatively smooth, GPS still sucks, and I still get the occasional sleep death but...until the financials works out to replace it, it's mine.

cm 7.1 is running very well for me as well excpet gps is non existent. I dont know if its my captivate or att, but as soon as i go into nyc i get no data at all, i ran speed test just today and i was .14 mb/s down , which is quite atrocious.

Back on to topic , i think i am going to try and hold out for an phone with ics out of the box to use my upgrade on. So guess i am looking for maybe march or april of next year for an new phone hopefully my captivate will survive till next spring

Just throwing it out there but if you want GPS on your cappy I would totally recommend Darky 10.2 EE. I was a HUGE fanboy of Team Phoenix but I have to give Darky all the props on a complete fully functional ridiculously fast and most battery efficient rom I have ever flashed. I could post screen shots of my battery use that you wouldn't even believe. GPS is by far the best I have ever had ....locks in twenty seconds consistently and tracks very well. If you go through ALL the steps to flash it....you will not be disappointed. I will say there are not many themes but the Goldie red theme is slick. Of the hundred or so ROMS I have flashed, my captivate is now retired and happy.

If you decide to flash.... use the Ficeto resurrection Odin base first then follow the instructions to flash 10.2 extreme edition. The Darky site has a nice walkthrough so you will find everything you need, I can vouch for the darkcore 2.9 kernel I have not and will not update to the new one so I can't say its better....like I said.... my captivate is retired.

BTW only bug I have ever encountered is the charge bug ....when I pulled it off the charger for the first couple of weeks battery sometimes drop to 98% other days it would drop to 90. Has not had a problem in a long time 98% is pretty much the norm. Either way I have had the phone up for 22 hours with over 70 minutes of talktime, countless texts and XDA app and web browsing most of the time...Its crazy.

My 1 year warranty is up next month but I still have 2 years to go on my contract with Rogers. I am sure that it will cost me $400-$500 to get a Galaxy S II with the early upgrade fees and cost of the phone. I am pretty happy with my Captivate right now so will probably wait for some stability on the root versions of ICS and do my first root in the new year sometime!

Typical Canadian contracts are for 3 years (rather than the 2 years common in the States), as memory serves.

Wow. I wonder if they chop a half-year (and more) off the contracted time to permit an early upgrade as AT&T does.
