The future of Android Wear

Google seriously wants to take over the smartwatch market with their Android spin-off and it does seem like a pretty decent OS to put on a watch. No doubts on that.

But my question is, is Android Wear any good for anything else? Do you think that, as it stands, Android Wear is a viable choice to put on the wearables of the (not so distant) future.

I think it'd be kind of clunky to have a different Android for every single type wearable device that is made but I don't know if Google have thought that much ahead.

What do you guys think? Has Android Wear the capacity to evolve and take on new challenges or is it a one-off technology which will fade out when the smartwatch craze wears off?

I don't like the idea of wearables as the total package, and I love the idea of mobile. So as I see it. While your phone is in your pocket, you can have the watch connected to it for simple things like phone calls possibly texting *with voice to text* and google will prolly shove hangouts down out throat for video chat and restrict it to only hangouts..

But I don't see it being the all in one package. Screen size reduction from a PC or laptop to tablet and smartphone is okay, its still a usable screen when you get used to it, but not even 2 inches? That's just silly...

What I'd love to see is an Android Wear pocket watch that could say go on a keyring or belt chain just to save us from having to pull out a 5+ inch phone/phablet/tablet.
I don't like wearing watches.
Imagine even a steam punk type case pocket watch ? Interchangeable cases? An ultra minimalist modern pure glass or steel version? That be so cool.
Android is is exciting. Just wish I was in a position to design things because I'm certainly not in a position to buy new tech

EDIT PS I'm not sure how wear is intended to work but id want my devices to be pretty dumb with my phone/tab doing all the work and just displaying it on the wear device
I want the device to be cheap and power efficient
