The "Linux questions (and other stuff)" thread

I got KDE looking like Mac OS X so it can be as customized as Android.

Moody, it would appear the roles have reversed. Now you're having problems while everything works fine for me. Except, I would still like the option to boot ChromeOS. If I re-enable OS Verification, it wipes everything, including Linux. None of the scripts meant go restore ChromeOS as the default work. It always boots into Ubuntu.

More than Android, IMNSHO. :D

Poetic justice! Besides, I'm not too proud to ask for help when I need it!

Wait...it's working now. I took a break from it (had to go outside to feed the peacocks anyway) that lasted several hours. Then I decided to reset the Chromebook back to its original condition. I started over. I'm now installing Kubuntu on it--via Ubuntu and Synaptic. :D (And I STILL think Ubuntu pales in comparison to Kubuntu.)

I'm not that far along yet. Let me get Kubuntu running and then we'll see what happens if I want to boot ChromeOS--which I really can't see WANTING to do, but you never know.

I still got KDE looking like well.... KDE(Linux Mint flavour) :) except for changing the software launcher from the default Kickoff to Lancelot...as well as changing the wallpaper. I already got a Macbook, don't need another laptop looking like it. LOL

Yeah... I'm looking for KDE 4 themes (I'm assuming that's what I want), but I'm seeing a lot of grey, and a whole bunch of squared corners.

... or OSX clones.

All the power in this desktop and that's all these people can come up with?

Seriously, I have a Windows 95 theme that can throw all this shite out the damn window.

Update on my Chromebook adventure. :)

Kubuntu is up and running and looks great. TINY, but nice. I just posted this comparison shot in the Chromebook thread--it's my new and old laptops:

I never was given partitioning choices, despite following the ChrUbuntu instructions to the letter. gParted shows a file system as I described earlier: /dev/sdaX where X=1 through 12, plus three unallocated; it reports file systems including unknown, unallocated, fat16 and ext4; there is no 'mount point' column, and each partition I've clicked on shows 'not mounted.'

Since I didn't have partitioning choices, I don't have my usual, carved in stone, partitions:

/
/home
/data
[swap]

Of course I'll be tinkering with it to see what I can do about that.

df -v shows:

/dev/root
devtmpfs
none
none
none
none
none

with /dev/root mounted on /.

Still a lot of exploring/understanding to do...

Well i don't have to mimic a MacBook Pro anymore. i just got me one :)

always wanted a Mac laptop. got tons of junk Windows lappies, a Chromebook, tons of little junk Android netbooks, a cheesy Windows CE netbook, and two running Ubuntu variants. one running Windows XP (no longer needed because my MacBook Pro does iTunes. i only used it to transfer stuff to my iDevices and Androids) and tons of tablets from Apple, Android, etc. my place looks about as cluttered as Tony Stark's house. the last Mac i owned was a crappy iMac G3 with OS 9.1. i could actually look cross-eyed at it and it would crash.

There are but two loves in my life. Deer and Technology. My Techno-Geek half is taking over at the moment

Okay, first like about KDE/Plasma on Mint 15-- four separate desktop wallpapers!

Second, need to get used to, though, scrolling through desktops using the wheel.

Now all I have to do is figure out why Firefox forgot its theme, and get rid of the options bar whenever I hover over a launcher on the desktop...

Yippee!! :D How cool is that?!

Keep in mind that you're not limited to only four desktops.

Second, need to get used to, though, scrolling through desktops using the wheel.
I'm sure there's a setting to change that, but I've never looked for it.

Now all I have to do is figure out why Firefox forgot its theme
Did it actually lose its theme or is it just its fonts that are weird?

and get rid of the options bar whenever I hover over a launcher on the desktop...
Put your widgets where you want them, then right-click anywhere on your desktop and lock widgets. Options bar gone! Unlock widgets as needed.

Thanks, Moody, figure out the locking thing.

Now still trying to figure out how to get my FN+Function keys working, playing with themes and settings, et al...

I may have found the resolution fix, won't know until I restart.

Banshee doesn't work well with KDE; it doesn't seem to be theming at all, and it doesn't autodetect CDs the way it does in Cinnamon.

So, yeah-- still a learning curve, but entertaining for the moment.

Really would like to see a minty theme, though, with more roundy and less squarishness.

Thanks, Moody, figure out the locking thing.
You're welcome. I don't even have anything on my desktops--I like them absolutely CLEAR!--but I remembered that from when my mother kept messing hers up. :)

Now still trying to figure out how to get my FN+Function keys working, playing with themes and settings, et al...
Go through the 8 billion options in settings, and you're bound to get them the way you want. :D

Really would like to see a minty theme, though, with more roundy and less squarishness.
What have you done so far to find themes? Remember, you can add a lot of eye candy via Synaptic [or whatever you use], but you can add tons more than that from within settings. For example, Settings | System Settings | Workspace Appearance | Desktop Theme | Get New Themes. Seriously, if you can't find something(s) that totally thrill you, I'll be shocked. There's literally no limit to the combinations you can come up with--a theme here, a decoration there, an icon set from somewhere, a color scheme... And then you can tweak most things individually--so the customization choices just never end. :)

This is what I have at the moment...

I will likely change the Firefox theme again... and everything else still looks like something from the '90s... all gray and square and shit...

That's OK...you got the all important boiled candy looking maximise and minimise buttons, and they're on the left as well. :p

I quite like the "all gray and square and shit" with slightly rounded corners look(default Linux Mint), it's pleasing to my eyes and is functional IMO. :) ...I don't try to do the Mac OS X Aqua stuff, not on my Linux systems....and no Dock either. :D

Actually, I don't like the candy... I prefer just a plain red circle-X and such, but that is not available at the moment.

That is, not until I have the time/motivation to build my own...

I swear, KDE must have been designed either by aliens or by a team of Microsoft developers eight hours into a weekend-long alcoholic bender.

Still don't have the resolution figured out...

... and I really need those function keys! This display is too damn bright at 0430...

The function keys don't work for me either. The hardware either isn't supported (ACPI) or the keys aren't. I have been able to dim it properly though through KDE system settings. I think under power or something.

Is this the function keys on a Chromebook, for dimming the lights, adjusting sound etc. not working when running linux...perhaps others have run into this issue before, and might have found a fix? probably keyboard mapping.

Oh, I am sure there is a keyboard mapping solution; I just don't think it should be that difficult-- in my case, Cinnamon detected the functions right away, but Plasma is ignoring them completely.

All my function keys work on the laptop I'm typing this on, my HP dv7. They all worked on my dv6000 as well.

Actually, I don't like the candy... I prefer just a plain red circle-X and such, but that is not available at the moment.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record, what have you done to get more themes/decorations? I just took a few screenshots of some of the window decorations I've installed, and I'm seeing several that look like you might like them:

That shouldn't be necessary.

I swear, KDE must have been designed either by aliens or by a team of Microsoft developers eight hours into a weekend-long alcoholic bender.
I'm baffled. My desktops look nothing like that. I'm guessing that you're not taking full advantage of the zillions of themes, decorations, styles, and colors available to you.

Still don't have the resolution figured out...
What's the issue there? I don't recall offhand.

There is such a thing as too much choice, you know. :p

So, the resolution on the screen seems to be worse on the Plasma desktop than on Cinnamon. Of course, this is a subjective thing, the wallpapers are different between the two environments, as well as the fonts.

I changed the default fonts in Plasma and dropped them down a point, and next time I boot we'll see if there is any improvement.

I have surfed through the themes available via the settings dialog for various sub-dialogs, and downloaded a good dozen of each.

As pretty as each one looks in its advertised page, the end result is not quite as romantic for any program not specifically designed into KDE. For instance, both Libre Office and Banshee look like ports from Win NT. Lord knows what wine will look like, but I at least expect that look out of that program.

I'm sorry, Moody, but a lot of this stuff is just not very intuitive. Part of that may be expectations on my part as a Windows and Gnome user, but some of it just makes no sense to me.

I also understand that some of this may very well be me shooting myself in the foot for adding KDE to an existing Mint (Cinnamon) operating system instead of installing a new instance on the drive.

You should at least feel content that you got this old dog to wander over to your side of the fence.

I will continue to complain, and there's nothing any of you damn kids can do about it.

... now get off my lawn!
