The "Linux questions (and other stuff)" thread

Absolutely. Can't believe they even make laptops without DVD drives now..

Oh, but they do, and I was suckered in two ways.....
I only wanted to spend $500 maximum, and I was away from home, like 2,000 miles away....
and I needed to buy it from a store front, so I located a Best Buy.....

and their inventory had been raided by a sale that was held the previous day... aren't I the lucky one??

I looked at that "thin thing" and wondered "how in the hell is it so thin?" and did not STOP to finish up that thought.... it is so thin, because it does NOT have a DVD drive in it.

I really, really, do miss my previous ASUS laptop, it was a full 17" hi-res screen, it had gaming processors in it, the full 9 yards worth... I bought it online for a specific purpose "speed!!!" and I paid thru the ass for it... but I enjoyed the hell out of it, right up until my son-in-law thought I was too slow packing up at a hotel one day and just grabbed it out of my hands and it hit the floor. end of laptop... I was unable to fix it, ordered a new hard drive, and it still won't boot. called ASUS tech support, and they wanted $400 flat rate to fix it. argh!!! now I wish I had done just that.

even though it was 4 years old, it was 10 times the POS thing I have now.

Actually.. I have a confession to make: That happened to me with the 1st laptop I ordered just before the ASUS. It was a micro thin Acer and no DVD drive.. I told the PC guy to send that back and tell me about stuff like that next time. Then I went on Amazon.com (of course) & grabbed the ASUS instead.. Awesome choice, IMHO. Yep, go with the DVD drive. This thing is effortless in Linux, smoking speeds in processing. Air seems to blow cooler than running Windows also..

If I had not been on a motorcycle tour when my borrowed Piece of Crap, a Win8.0 something or other, just got to my nerves so bad..... it was soooooooooooooooooooooo slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
and the WiFi on it couldn't find it way out of a wet paper bag..... plus Win8.x needs a touch screen and it didn't have one..... even with Classic Shell on it, it was a turd.

I would have ordered from Amazon myself, but when you are "on the move" that is not an option.

Ahh the luxury of having 16GB RAM. Look, at the swap - 0%.

Ubuntu continues to brighten my life and delight me with it's awesomeness. I just edited a Microsoft Word document, which Word had consistently failed to print out correctly. Libre Office did exactly what I wanted and printed the document precisely how it looks on the screen. Well done, score another one to Linux!

@LV426, quit that shit........... :rolleyes:

I really didn't want to have to mess with a different distribution of Linux..........

BUT, if I could merge winders apps onto the desktop................ ;)

Which desktop are you using? I am really hooked on Cinnamon

:) Just saying..

I like Ubuntu's standard desktop, Unity.
I don't really chop and change distros, as I need a very stable system at work that doesn't crash, go slow, eat up RAM, or bother me with endless reboots.

that is why I stopped when I found the LiveCD with Mint Cinnamon, after using many other distro demos, it just felt 'easier to me'... I ran all the demos on my Desktop PC with the 24" monitor and a full keyboard....
Simply because the laptop does not have a DVD in it.... and getting past that POS Toshiba BIOS was a PITA.
Only wanted to do it once...

I only use this laptop for watching my forums, and it must be rock solid, no quirky stuff to get in my way.
So far, after about 9 months this version of Linux has been rock solid, never once did anything quirky.

I will download a new LiveCD version of your Unity and try it out.

Well,
I am now on my Desktop PC with Ubuntu's latest LiveCD demo running.
I don't like the fact that none of the Windows type keyboard shortcut keys will work. In Linux Mint Cinnamon, they have incorporated every one of them...

In firefox, the Bookmarks will not respond to keyboard entries. Alt-B brings up the bookmarks, but that is as far as it goes. if I hit the letter 'N' it should drop down thru the bookmarks menu and highlight each succeeding entry that starts with 'N'....

New Posts is a direct actionable now link to the forum's New Posts for me.... that is a highly critical GAME OVER RIGHT NOW issue.

this one item right here will stop the entire exercise, I won't go any farther.

bye bye Ubuntu...

.

Well it's horses for courses isn't it? And those little details that you get used to make all the difference. As long as you're happy with the desktop features, then everything is fine. That's the great thing about Linux distros - so many to choose from.

Me likes too. BTW, I haven't forgotten about you, just EXTREMELY BUSY today and not looking good for tomorrow either. I promise you that we can rid that Win10 and put "your own" win7 on your laptop :)
I'm ready! [emoji41] But I understand being busy as that'll most likely be me next WK or two.. Gonna try to move closer to/in town. Get cha some sleep, bro.

I've found Libre Office still can't show mixed English and Chinese PPTs properly though. WPS Office does though, and that's available for Linux. :thumbsupdroid:

While I was running that Ubuntu demo CD on my Desktop Win7 PC,
I found that it can't find a lot of files that I positively know exactly where they are.

It just shows a blank folder
for instance, look at C:\windows\ and under the folders there are a slew of binary files, and it did not show a single file. nada..... that ended the exercise super fast.

Nothing on a Winders drive should be hidden from Linux....

I have used Linux to repair broken Windows computers in the past.
I suspect that IF, I had decided to really get deeper into Ubuntu, there might be a switch to toggle show it shows "all files", but it only showed me directories.... on the Live CD

... hidden files?
Whenever you want to dig into a directory's contents GUI based file managers can be cumbersome, use a terminal.
Also, type in:
man ls
and you'll be presented with ls flags than you'll probably ever need.

right there, you have just shown what is wrong with Linux/Unix......
the Command Line argument....

yes, it is more powerful, but I do NOT want to learn that crap all over again.
GUI is here and now, and it should work for me, "here and now" and not be a PITA to use.

until Linux makes the GUI work "right", it will not ever be for the masses...

I highly suspect that Linux/Unix will never, ever, make it to the Desktop scene like Mac and Windows have.... they are Predominant and always will be.

Windows: Because people be lazy.

Once the majority is too afraid to learn new things, society will become lost. CLI isn't necessarily difficult, it's just different. There's always hope though, anyone who's been around kids know their minds are really, really adaptable and they soak up things around them like a sponge.

you have missed my point, if it won't work from a GUI, I am done with it.

Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon does... it very nearly works and looks like Win7...

that to me is a Win Win for both my laptop/Linux and me....

Ubuntu is just to aggravating to try and make it work like I want it to.
Why should I have to go into Skullduggery mode to get things to work for me?

If Mint continues to improve on their GUI, they will win over a lot of Windows folks who are upset with the world of MicroSloth.
