The magic is in the Droid keyboard?

Rookie-noob question... My wife is thinking to make the big switch from original iPhone to something with Android. She loves my Droid, but she's also had her eye on the Nexus One and possibly, the new Motoroi that may come out in March. (Kinda like Droid plus 8mp camera, HDMI out, HiDef recorder, minus keyboard).

We were at Verizon and the rep told us about all the fancy things we could do "because" of the keyboard, and yes, he said we could actually install different ROMS and it would be like having a new and different phone as often as we like.

Apparently, the subject is not "taboo" as Verizon, or at least, not for this rep.

But was it true? If she went with Nexus, would she have access to a all the new ROMS and mods that the Droid has access to? Or is all this modifying only possible because we have a keyboard to make all this magic happen?

I poked around some of the other boards and didn't see near the frenzied pace of developmental activity that we see on the Droid every day.

Again, is this success due in part to simply having not only an open platform, but a keyboard that makes all this possible?
 
Well, Verizon is a huge wireless provider, and you have to realize that the Droid is pretty much their flagship product right now. A lot of people have it, which means a lot more developers, modders, etc. I doubt the keyboard has anything to do with it though. There are tons of Android phones out there with no keyboard and I think everything out there right now, save the Nexus One, is able to be rooted (I think...).
 
Any Android phone sans keyboard still has access to all of the ROMs that we're using, provided that they're Android 2.x phones. The hardware keyboard is an important feature for us geeks to use Terminal Emulators, or to be able to type once booted into the Recovery Console. But I'm guessing that your wife isn't going to be into that stuff anyway.

you could install home++, panda, or whatever and tell her you flashed a cooked, custom, rooted, oc'd, illegal, one of a kind, magic rom.

my wife would believe it, but she has no idea about that stuff.
 
The N1 is rooted and can flash ROMS too. I'm not sure the process but I'm sure it's doable sans keyboard.


Also, the magic is in my pants.
