Is this USB storage actual RAM, or does the Note have its own SD (or some other) card storage? Wonder if USB storage would have faster access times than the external SD card.

Not certain, but I believe it's the same as usb sd external storage, just internal. I know that even w/o an sd card installed, after a reboot it scans the internal just like the external.
