The year, 1981. The place, Hyatt Regency & Reunion Arena in Dallas Texas.
The greatness, the one, the only RUSH.

Moving Pictures had just elevated Rush into the mainstream but Eric and myself, both juniors in high school, had been long time fans of the band and this would be our first chance to see them live.
A few days before the concert we had to spend a couple of nights at Reunion Arena in order to be first in line for the chance to buy tickets from the last remaining lot of a few thousand.
The Hyatt Regency Hotel is adjacent to Reunion Arena and we would routinely saunter over to use the bathroom or grab a bite to eat.
On our last trip to the Hyatt Regency, just hours before the ticket windows were to open, we decided to explore the hotel. (Mission Impossible Theme Plays Now)
Armed with liquid courage and probably smelling like a couple of yaks, we snuck past the hotel lobby babe and security then hit the elevators.
At first we were just going to ride for a while but then the light bulbs went off. Maybe the boys were already in town but how would we figure out what room they were in?
Figuring out the floor was easy but there were several Presidential and Penthouse Suites to choose from.
Once we were on the 26th floor, the elevator doors opened and we looked to our left to see the only set of double doors that had trays of half eaten food, empty champagne bottles, dirty linens, etc., etc., piled haphazardly in front of them.
This had to be their room! We exited the elevators, stage left of course, and began debating if we should knock on the door.
By now we were sweating and our hearts pounding but we took our shot, knocked on the doors and giggled like little school girls when Neil Peart opened the door, sighed and had a "not again" look on his face.
We thought he would just tell us to go away and close the door but he asked us what we wanted. We stammered and stuttered our "big fans, love you guys man", not really sure what we said but Neil opened the door fully and told us to come on in.
I've only fainted once in my life and thankfully this wouldn't be one of those times but OMG, the room was spinning and I couldn't believe what was happening!
We knew they were pretty laid back people but we couldn't have dreamed of a better interaction. We introduced ourselves and all three of them came over to shake our sweaty palms!!
After about 5-10 minutes in their room exchanging pleasantries, we figured it was about time to leave them alone. We didn't even think about having them sign anything until Geddy asked us about it. We didn't have any concert wear so we had them sign our bell bottom Levis, which we proudly wore to the concert and never washed.
Once back in line, we couldn't even tell anybody what just happened.

Sorry this was so wordy.
I've had other brushes with greatness but they pale in comparison to this one.
So, anyone else care to share?

dont have any fun stories behind it, but ive helped out Steven Tyler, joey kramer, Tim wakefield, Bill Belechek, Marty Mcinnis(ex bruins player), Andy Brickley (another ex bruins star), raced against Usain Bolt at a track meet like 6 years ago, Steve Carrel. I've been to a cookout backstage at a concert with rob zombie, avenged seven fold and lamb of god. Thats all i can remember off the top of my head. and these are people i talked to or helped for at least 30 minutes +

great guy, its obvious in his music hes a huge car guy, but once he gets going he can just keep going especially about the older hot rods.

he had a few too many to drink before going on stage so when performing he slurred his words and missed some lyrics, but was a great show none the less

Ran into Val Venis and Maven in a hotel once. Val Venis was getting some ice and I was too intimidated to ask him to autograph a hotel towel as I should have.

Non wrestling fans will not be impressed by that story. Wrestling fans will not be impressed either. :(

I worked at a golf course a couple years ago. Collective Soul, Live, and Blues Traveler were on tour that year and had a show just north of us in Columbus. The lead singer and guitarist from Collective Soul came in to play, and my friend in the pro shop ended up joining them for a few rounds. He called me on my way to work that day and told me he had backstage passes! So me, him, and a couple other friends went that night to the concert, partied with them on their tour bus for a bit and got to watch the concert from backstage. I also got to meet John Popper from blues traveler briefly, he was a really cool guy. The lead singer from Live, however, was kind of an ass! haha

I also got to meet Ben Folds a few months ago when he played in Athens, OH. We were leaving the concert and I saw him just standing there on the sidewalk, people were walking right past him! So I went up, and dumbly muttered something about how awesome he is, and got a picture. I'm a much bigger Ben Folds fan than Collective Soul, so even though this experience wasn't as "cool" as the first, I enjoyed it more! :)

one person i've met who i wish I could have talked to, or hung out more with is Les claypool of primus.the brief few minutes i hung out with him he was a great guy, i'd love to have a drink with him some time.

This didn't happen to me but two of my air force buddies. We was on deployment to fairford England for a joint NATO exercise and had to send a bomber to Scotland for an air show.my two friends went on the bomber as they had flight status and loved golf. They always wanted to see a Scottish golf course. Soothe get there put the bomber to bed and next day head out to the golf course. While walking around they see Sean Connery and are floored. They tell them selves as they walk up to the man I will not act like a total loser and ask for an autograph. Well they walk up to him and all they say excitedly over and over you're Sean Connerey. You're Sean Connerey. They said they felt like total losers and in that Sean Connerey swagger why yes I am and they said you could tell he got a kick out of it because they said he chuckled as he said it. They said he wasn't stuck up and just went with it. They said we bet later on he said bloody Americans lol.

That's a story that stuck with me for like almost 20 years that he was so down to earth and gave me much more respect for the man. They never got the auto as they forgot after meeting a legend.

Since Golf has been mentioned a couple of times I'll post another.
I used to be the greenskeeper and golf cart mechanic at Tenison Park Muni in Dallas during the late 70's.
First off, this was the best/most fun job I've ever had and here is just one example of why.

Lee Trevino routinely played at Tenison and would bring his buddies with him.
To name just a couple, Chi Chi Rodriguez and Charlie Pride.

Lee and his buddies were such great people, never big timing the staff, and everytime they showed up, I'd keep the course open for them while they drank and pitched for cash from the back of the clubhouse onto the east side 18th green.

Good times for sure.
