He would have grown up in a culture that wasn't at all accepting, so I can understand if he wasn't sure how his fans (most of whom are probably of a similar age) would react.
I really can't comment on whether it was obvious because I've probably not thought about him at all this century (and I've got the worst gaydar on the planet anyway). But I'm sure there are some people who would disapprove if they knew but also choose not to see it unless they have to - a sort of personal "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
Anyway, I'm glad it's worked out for him.
