The new Iphones are ridiculously expensive, and the latest androids are not that far behind in cost. It costs them only $200-300 to manufacture them in China, and they charge you $600-700. They are more expensive than tablets, and even many laptops. Even building your own gaming PC is cheaper than an Iphone or Galaxy S6.
They don't last long, even the manufacturers admit that they only last 2 years. They quickly become obsolete and outdated (a new model every year), and most people buy the LOCKED version, which makes the phone useless. You buy an Iphone 6 today, and next year, you not longer have a new phone.
Then, the provider companies cash in on this monopoly, and charge outrages amounts for pathetic slow data, minutes, and texts. The text cost them NOTHING, and they make you believe they are so generous, and even charge prepaid customers, cents per text.
Smartphones and their cellphone plans keep raising in price every year. The new Iphone and Galaxy are now out of reach for the average person, unless they go into debt, which is what basically most of them do. Now, any kid making minimum wage has the latest Iphone. The companies take advantage of the fact that the brain cannot process slow payments overtime, it tricks your brain into thinking you are not paying for the phone, and is not bad financial decision, when in reality, you are paying the same amount, and probably more than someone who bought it outright with cash.
They have become a status symbol, and that's why they are so expensive, more than tablets and laptops, because they know the sheeple will do anything to have them, and since most people don't have the means to buy an expensive luxurious car or house, the next best thing to show off, and keep up with the joneses, is to get new shiny smartphone, whereas a laptop or tablets, doesn't carry the same status symbol, because they are usually associated with geeks.
Luxurios laptops such as Apple Macbooks, cost more than 2k making them unreachable for most people, and is not something you easily show off as your smartphone.
