The Tablet Tavern

Have to teach the middle school famous English poetry tomorrow. I've already ruled out William Shakespeare and Robbie Burns for English that will confuse them. Forget teaching them Chaucer as well. Don't think they'll understand Jabberwocky either, I can't understand that one.

Any suggestions for things that are quite simple?

Dr Seuss is almost unknown in China.

Frost could work I think. Basically I have to teach them some famous English poems, for speaking practise.

I don't know how often they'll get the opportunity to speak all the "thee's" and "thou's" in Bronte, never mind "rapturous" or "divinest".

You could always teach them about the guy from Nantucket :eek: ;)

Think they can manage thee and thou and thy.

I know one that would confuse them though...
We twa hae run about the braes,
And pu'd the gowans fine;
But we've wandered mony a weary fit
Sin' auld lang syne
.

That's why I thought Burns was a bad idea.

He was Scottish, anyway. I suppose to your students, English, Scottish, San Francisco it's all English. :D
