The Unofficial Official Rogers Dream>Magic Hardware Upgrade Update Thread

i just got of the phone and confirmed my order, apparently it restarts ur contract to the date u order ur magic. and was told nothing of lack of stock, all i got was it should be there in 3 - 5 business days maybe sooner

This is crap, just another frustrated dream owner here. I've been without 3g for weeks now and It's starting to seriously piss me off. I've been using and modding HTC phones for a while back to the 6700 running windows and never encountered something this stupid.

So they send me a SD card with the update but after reading this forum it definitely doesn't inspire much confidence. I've been wanting to root my phone for a long time but just haven't had the time, so I decide that instead of screwing up this phone and possibly never being able to root it, I'd rather get a Magic for now...

I JUST got off the phone with the most ******ed service representative that barely understood english, not to mention the words android or firmware, and he kept telling me that the dream>magic upgrade was no longer available. After asking to speak to someone else he repeated the same thing so I just hung up before getting more frustrated. Any tricks to getting this upgrade?

Don't hang up and be persistent :p

I was told the offer was on hold before I could even finish. I told him no it was just started up again. I asked him to check and it was on so he put my order through.

*Note: Only black is available

ya got this aswell, i told him thats bs and to go check because i was told by a rogers rep and had confirmation through hearing ppls orders were back on and he threw on a surprised voice and said 'wouldya look at that its back!'

they are prob told to do this to save devices but as trechant said be persistent. i corrected him multiple times and he just procceded to put my order through

Alright thanks, I'm on hold again :D... I seriously don't want to do the 911 upgrade, but I miss my 3g and I couldn't say no to a free Magic, even though I probably will prefer my physical qwerty...

Exact same thing with me. Corrected him so many times. He thought the promo was because of the 911 glitch. I was put on hold for a few minutes, and then he told me it's back. I got a rep so fast. <1min

I didn't want their upgrade either. I decided it was time to root my phone. Good thing about this whole ordeal is Rogers took the risk of us bricking our phones! I figure if the root would have gone wrong and bricked I could have claimed their patch did it:D

But if your interested in rooting this seems to be the best guide to follow:

Thats what I'm running and I haven't looked back since. I blocked the HTC number so I quit getting phone calls from them and its been perfect.

Hi Everyone. I can confirm that the Dream to Magic upgrade promotion is up and running again. Here are the details:

  • Current Rogers customers who activated a new Rogers HTC Dream through Dec. 31, 2009

For the record, here is the latest as of 9:45pm EST on Feb 09

As per RogersMary, the Dream to Magic upgrade is NOW BACK ON.

If you call and ask a Rogers CSR you will likely get many different answers because they have NO clue, and very little training.

The following is NOT true:

1. It is NOT true that the Dream to Magic upgrade was/is because of the 911 bug.

2. It is NOT true that the upgrade has been canceled because the bug has been fixed.

3. It is NOT true that you have to pay anything.

4. It is NOT true that you have to send in your Dream.

If a CSR or rep from the Office of the President (OotP) tells you any of the above, he/she is either ignorant or lying, but either way, wrong.

The following is TRUE:

1. To qualify for the upgrade, you must have purchased your HTC Dream from Rogers WITH a 3 year data contract prior to Dec 31, 2009.

2. You do NOT have to pay ANYTHING! Zip, Zero, Zilch, Nada, Bupkiss!

3. You do NOT have to send back your Dream. You get to KEEP IT!

These are facts as confirmed by Rogers Mary. The BEST thing you can do when you call is ask them FIRST to look in your account for a note about your HTC Dream phone and the upgrade. RogersMary says everyone who qualifies will have a note on their account. If you just call up and ask about the "Dream Upgrade" or the "Magic Upgrade" you will probably just confuse them. If a Rogers CSR tried to tell you she does not exist or is not a Rogers employee, I can confirm that she is. Her official title is:

Mary Pretotto
Manager, Social Media Monitoring & Engagement
Rogers Communications Inc.

I'm gonna get my free magic in 3 to 5 days , i can't pick up any colors ( only black ) they do not offer any kind of credit and i can't pick up any other phone. They didn't give me any track number

I asked them about data credit and I've been told to call them back right after I get my monthly bill to get credited only for this month

Not to sound like a broken record, but has anyone else been told that the Magics are on back order/out of stock? I'm thinking my Rep. probably had out-dated info.

Hi Variant - The offer is only available on Rogers.com or by calling Customer Care. Chances are, your rep doesn't have the details.

If you call into Care, please ensure they are looking at your account information as the upgrade promotion is pre-loaded.

You're welcome to send me a PM if this continues to be a problem for you.

Thanks,
Mary

@RogersMary

So Mary, i suppose Rogers will do their best to inform Dream owners about that opportunity. Since You have all their info I guess sending each of them a text message would be easy and appropriate.

< Attention HTC Dream owner, your telephone will soon be obsolete. So we offer you a free upgrade to HTC Magic. This is a limited time offer Feb 9 to feb 14 >

It may not be a legal hazard like the e911 bug, but i bet you are going to get some mean phone calls when people start finding out they missed that opportunity. And they will.

Do the right thing Rogers, for everyone, not just for the techjunkies.

Any way ill do my part and send quick e-mail to every technology column writer in my area.

Just FYI, the "Upgrade my phone" link under the hardware section of my "MyRogers" page does not work and returns the error:
Upgrade My Phone

Your Hardware Upgrade can not be completed at this time.
We are unable to process your request at this time, please try again later.

Have you upgraded your phone to the Magic before? (before when it was on hold)
You might have to call Rogers Care to restart the order again because it seems the orders that were ordered a while back are ignored if you don't call.
Having said that, I called and will be getting my unit in 3-5 days. Just waiting for the tracking #/confirmation on email. Hope those guys get it right this time. Good luck!

...I'll look into that.

@RogersMary

Thanks for the response, but as far as I know they have processed my order. I phoned yesterday to do so, and when I asked how long it would be until I received the phone, the rep. said that she had no idea as all Magics were out of stock. I'm just wondering if this is correct, or if she was basing her statement of old info.

Mary,

With regards to the "Dream to Magic upgrade" I do understand that this upgrade is for the most part unique and I do applaud Rogers for providing this opportunity for dream owners "to choose" to upgrade to a Magic.

However, I do take exception to the process in which this upgrade opportunity was rolled out to customers.

Firstly, providing instructions of calling into Rogers Customer Care are simply way to vague and generic. Have you ever tried calling into Rogers yourself? One would have better luck navigating out of the Amazon jungle after parachuting in.

Secondly, providing instructions of logging into Rogers.com to complete the
upgrade are incomplete and inaccurate. I received the same message others have noted in this forum after attempting "a phone upgrade" such as "upgrade unavailable...please call Customer Care".

Thirdly, a "limited time" option to take advantage of this offer is poor business practice, especially such a short time period of week.

I moved over to being a new Rogers Customer in the summer of 2009 only because Rogers happened to be the exclusive carrier of Android phones at that time. I must say that my experience to date has been less than stellar, and in particular the past 40 days, extremely frustrating.

Writing this, I've found myself to be profoundly jaded at HTC, Rogers and the Rogers brand. After enduring "Department Transfers", repeated "Your Name, Postal Code, Date of Birth" with each department transfer this morning, I've been told the Magic is on its way to me arriving in 3 to 5 days. I wasn't told any other information which makes me skeptically, however time will tell.

I do not hold any ill will towards the customer service representatives, they were doing the best they could with the information I best could provide. Where I do hold judgement is with the Customer Relations and the so called "Engagement" office of Rogers Communications which you purportedly represent.

As a member of the community and a current customer of Rogers, I give a thumbs down.

Well, tried to do the upgrade last night through rogers.com, but got the same error others have seen. So I called last night, and after a bit of the usual runaround, the CSR did as I asked and looked into my account, saw the upgrade offer there and put through the upgrade. But... tracking centre wasn't open, so she couldn't give me a tracking number to check on where my new Magic is. Checked my email again, and still no confirmation email, and nothing shows up MyRogers, so I'll try phoning in again to see if they can confirm that my order is there. What a hassle.

just a question was there a choice as to way device we ordered? or was it strictly the magic?

It is strictly to the Magic. There are a few reasons for this:

1) It's an HTC to HTC device. I think HTC is taking the hit on this one.
2) Originally, the choice for consumers was between the Dream and the Magic. Most chose the Dream because of the qwerty keyboard. We were all told that the Dream and the Magic could run Android 1.6 (I believe it was 1.6). The offer is to compensate users who were falsely informed about the next version of Android.

xbrav.
I'm now being told (by my contact in the Office of the President) that they can only promise the release of the X10 "in Quarter 2," which could be any time from now until the end of June. They've extended my offer accordingly to "until the X10 comes out." it seems that all you have to do to get good service from Rogers is lose four days of your life on the telephone. o.O

i wonder though because of this. they extended his offer
