Things are shutting down

I've enjoyed using my Nexus 5, however, the last few months have seen things starting to shut down. So far, I've lost the rear camera and light, I can only speak into the phone by putting it on speaker, the front camera I can use through a third party app. If I go through messenger, I can use the front facing camera for a video. I have no camera icon. It's gone. When I try accessing camera by swiping from the front page, I get a quick view through the camera then a message camera has stopped.

I have tried some repair. I have rooted the camera (confirmed) and downloaded Camera Restarter. Didn't work. And as stated above, the front camera only works with a third party app. Got rid of it because I was tired of the ads.

So my question is Android 7 Nougat is about to be released. Any chance any of these things will be repaired with the update since the phone is rooted? (Probably not but thought I would ask?)

You won't be able to take the OTA update if you're rooted. It's hard to know everything you've done to the phone, especially with being rooted. Some of the issues may be hardware failure but a lot of it sounds like software issues.

I would highly suggest flashing the factory images and start from scratch. You would lose everything so backup anything important. Also, take a full backup in TWRP of the system, data and boot partitions and copy that backup to a PC before you flash factory images.

If the factory images don't solve the issues or if for any reason you want to restore your phone back to it's state prior to flashing the factory images, you will be able to use that TWRP backup.

Actually, Nougat was released over a month ago, it is Android 7.1 that is coming out -- and the Nexus 5 isn't getting Nougat (though it is still getting monthly security updates). I would think it is unlikely any update will fix your phone -- though, as mentioned by Brian, a factory reset may help fix things.

If the factory reset doesn't help, you might consider trying to buy a Nexus 5X; it is like an updated version of the Nexus 5 that is made by LG. While the 5X is essentially "discontinued" since the Pixel is now being sold, there are still some being sold by third parties, and you can find them for roughly $200 (or possibly cheaper).

I just want to clarify that flashing the factory images will be different than a factory reset, and that I am suggesting flashing the factory images. Also, if you do perform a factory reset, it will need to be done via TWRP and not through the phone menus since you are rooted.

The problem with a factory reset is, it only wipes user data. Flashing the factory images will reinstall the system image and undo any changes you've made to the system partition.
