Help Think I dodged a bullet!? Need a bit of advice as well please!

Well I think I dodged a bullet.

My first OM was perfect. 2.2.1. rooted with custom recovery and overclock kernel. Everything worked fine. Only a few minor issues with updating the SU binary but NO rebooting it freezing issues what so ever. But then while taking the sd card out (usually use the USB) one of the small golden pins broke off. Thinking I was screwed got me worried...SD card wouldn't read and more, not to mention half my apps were moved to it! So even though I still had root and overclocked stock kernel (768 max), it wasn't good enough broken with no sd card. Very limited with no sd card!

My friend had an Optimus (manufactured same year/month) and gave it to me. I had already rooted it a few months prior and removed the bloatware. Stable at 825! I didn't flash recovery or kernel. SADLY it suffered from the stupid annoying reboot, freeze, force close problems people are complaining about! I flashed joneidys recovery and the stock OC kernel and still suffered from the problems.

I took my original working Optimus apart to see how the sd slot was attached to the board and it was only four small.solder points that I could see. So I thought about desoldering the sd from the rebooting one to the broken one. Keep in mind I don't have an iron and don't have much soldering experience. lol

So the next morning I wake up and decide to try to bend the prong in hopes I could revive it. I ben it upwards slightly with a mini screwdriver and out the card in. IT SAID MOUNTING SD CARD. I couldn't believe it, made my day. Even though I'm down $20 since I switched numbers twice! And my original non rebooting one has a lower stable threshold for overclocking. (768 vs 825)

So I got it back and running luckily and it hasn't rebooted once! I haven't flashed any roms yet as I don't fully understand it and what to backup, delete and how easy it is to go back to my stock setup with my apps, kernel and recovery. Do the recovery and kernel get replaced when flashing a custom rom? What about flashing the stock LG rom or downgrading?

Only issue that I keep getting is Superuser's su binary wont update to 3.0.3 from 3.0. I have tried the updated fixer and it finds nothing. It says ok for everything and superuser grants access and it fails after asking for root access. But the toast notification comes up that says it was granted access. I forogt the superuser permission,tried again and still happens. Any ideas? Is supersuser something you can just uninstall and reinstall a new one from the market?.Sorry for the noon questions but searching isn't so great using the phones "3g" signal...

Sorry for such a long post (posting from my phone atleast) but im just curious about the superuser issue now.

1. how in the hell did you overclock to 825 with a stock kernel?

2. flashing new ROMS sometimes changes the kernel but never the recovery.
You should absolutely add a recovery to your phone in order to nandroid your current state.
3. Doing a Nandroid backup means that everything is saved the way it is currently and allows you to go back if you have issues with a ROM.

4. Superuser updates: do it twice.
 
Not the stock kernel. The top sticky on the all things root page I believe. R.o.c.k.

I do have recovery on both and nandroid backups. But sucks the messed up one is able to oc to 806-825 but my non messed up one with the same kernel only goes like 768 787 maybe if im lucky.

I've tried the superuser a bunch. any way to flash it using recovery or moving a downloaded binary with root explorer or astro?
 
Ok so I flashed the 3.0.3 su binary using recovery and all is well. No other issues I can think of right now on my "non re-boot issue" OM. So im a happy camper!

Since I switched from the rebooting one, it hasn't rebooted once while sitting there. I've opened things and left it there, and tried making it reboot and it doesn't. Couldn't be service thats causing it? The kernel to blame?

Regardless, I haven't had any reboots with my original one (the one I fixed the sd) since I got it activated. I did brick it a few month ago and used the old long root method and flashed the rooted bin and manually installed su and busybox. Im wondering if I flash the stock rom back to the rebooting one, will it fix the issue. I wanna give this phone to someone who can use it, but don't want to give them a rebooting nightmare! Now I have a test phone I guess...
 
Joneidys recovery is great but it doesn't seem to do nand backups or restores (not sure which) well.

If I could upload this apk I think it would help you out in all of this about roms and ish, ill upload it when I get home :)

its weird. ever since I switched back to my original one, the rebooting one hasn't reboot once! I don't get it. It runs at a faster OC frequency and everything seems fine with it when im not using it. Im half tempted to switch back. But I just know the minute I do its gonna start the BS again. I have a friend that really needs a phone but don't want to hand over a phone he will want to throw against the wall! lol

I just want it to reboot so im not feeling crazy! the entire time it had service active it was rebooting and freezing. Now that I fixed my sd slot on my original one it seems to be fine. wtf...

another thing...if I want to change recoveries, how would I go about that? Would I remove the files from the last one off my sd and put the new ones and do the commands with adb? Is it really that simple?
 
wouldn't call me a noobie, but I've been modding android and idevices, all consoles for a few years and am a computer tech. Mod of a phone forum (that is dying out)... I just don't know the optimus so well since it a bit new.

I currently have joneidy's recovery on both. one was the one out at that time and the newest install wouldn't let me use gnm cause the code didn't work and I didn't really try to hard. so I did the joneidy and it was like cake. just know the newer one has a bit better ui and is better on some nandroids and restores or something? I know about the app and can't find it free. I found someone hosting it but it goes to the market. I can use adb now and terminal on my phone. just wasn't sure what to remove prior to putting the new flash image and .img on my sd. and if it would just overwrite and all would be well.

another thing is, the rebooting (806/825 stable) one hasn't rebooted in over 18 hours. I've tried to run everything and nothing will reboot the dang thing lol. I wanna switch back cause it just seems smoother but I just know its gonna start messing up after I pay the $10 (3rd time) and I'll be pi***d! ha

Not that it matters much but both were manufactured on the same month and year, have the same software version, baseband and the stock OC r.o.c.k kernel. Why would one reboot and not the other. well now the rebooting one isn't rebooting since the service went inactive...but still odd.
 
You can change lines for free by dialing *228 :D and the only reason I said newbie is because you haven't tried roms yet it's nbd :)
 
I knew about the *228 menu for updating the prl but didn't know I could activate my phone easily. What menu option and what is needed? my meid for the phone I want turned on?

I flashed the stock bin to the rebooting one and rooted it and what not. im gonna make it how I want it and maybe put service on it and see if it reboots. I can switch back and forth using the *228 menu as many times as I want? is it really that easy?!
 
I'm not positive, anyone want to verify this???? I pretty sure you can if not then you should be able to online :) sorry if I'm misinformed please correct me if so ;)
 
also can anyone elaborate on the overwriting of recoveries? I have joneidy's on both of my Optimus', but was told the GNM was superior as it had a better UI and handled nandroid restores/backups better? Would I need to.just remove the old img and recovery flash files from the sd and add the new ones and run the adb commands?

Haven't really put any custom roms on yet because I bricked my first OM, installed tasker and froze so I pulled the battery and wouldn't get past android loading screen. Then I recovered the stock rom and re-rooted and then my sd card slot broke. Then I get the new OM and it was rebooting all the time. So I fix my sd and change service back to it. Ever since I removed the service it hasn't rebooted once.

Last night I flashed the stock rom and rooted. so im gonna see if it has any rebooting still. if not, I want it on cause it runs a bit smoother and faster and the OC kernel can be stable at 806/825 rather then my current 748/768 max.

Thanks for all the advice and if anyone can tell me if I can manually program my phone number from phone to phone using the *228 menu...
 
You don't need to keep the recovery files on the sd once you flash the recovery, download flash image GUI.from xda (Google it) and then just download gnm recovery and flash it through flash image gui :) once you get recovery set up its really easy to flash roms and everything. Also I tested and yes you can switch lines through *228.
You have two devices practice on one (these things are almost completely unbrickable :D )
 
Ok, I flashed the stock bin and rooted the rebooting one. Installed custom recovery using that app, and flashed the OC kernel and it hasn't rebooted once. Keep in mind its not currently activated with metro. It is able to OC to a stable 825 and 806. Did some stress tests while on the performance scaling, and ran for long periods of time with no errors with either frequency.

I want this phone over my currently activated "non-rebooting" optimus if it can continue to not reboot. I have only installed T.B. and backed up and uninstalled the bloatware, SetCPU to OC and ADW Launcher for Home. It has twice the amount of total talk time listed in About Phone>Status compared to the non-rebooting one but that shouldn't make a difference?

They both have the same baseband, kernal and other H.W. numbers and what not. I want to activate this one but havent done so personally using *228 and cant find any other users that have and explained how it worked. I want to know if I activate it and it reboots, can I just switch back with *228 with no limits to how many times u do it?

Also want to know if I can just overwrite and put the newer GNM recovery on my current activated Optimus using the FlashImageGUI app and all be well?

I just have a feel like ill install all my apps and activate it and it will start the BS again....whats the worst that can happen?
 
Yes *228 works fine it gives you an option to change phones there's no limit :) yes you can overwrite the old recovery, and you should look into roms if you are craving better performance and customization ;)

on my currently activated one (stock rom) I have backed up and uninstalled the home selector and lg home apks and tb wont restore them. it just sits there attempting and doesn't move. I have adw launcher installed, but if for some reason it messes up or gets uninstalled ill have issues huh?

I don't have internet at my home right now so I cant download any roms right this moment but will later or tomorrow at my brothers. Which ones are considered the best most stable? As for activating the rebooting one, ill try that later as well. just don't want it NOT to work and then I have to take it to the store. But I have 2 OM's to mess with so ill start experimenting.

Find bobz cm7 thread and download the most current build. You can just wipe cache and dalvik cache then flash the latest build. (Be sure to make a backup ;))

Yes you will, find the thread (it may be a sticky in all things root) with all the system apps download the ones you need and place them in the necessary folder with a file browser.

I prefer the cm7 roms, bobz is pretty good you have two phones try all kinds of roms out :)

Yes you can, you can even backup text and other things with some apps, just be sure to make a backup of user only apps for when switching. Yes it is usually that process, but for updating on the same rom its usually dalvik and cache unless stated otherwise.
