Help Thinking about returning my Verizon LG G2

lkmbrd

Lurker
I have ~10 days to decide. So far this phone is annoying me in daily use. Anyone else having these same issues?

1. "Knock On" is a crapshoot, it works maybe half of the time.
2. Auto-Brightness barely adjusts anything and when it does it's sssllloowww. (saw this mentioned in another thread)
3. There's a faint grid of dots on the screen that you can see in direct light. (saw this mentioned in another thread)
4. Even though the phone is supposedly a beast, lag still happens when going to app drawer and other random times.
5. When text messaging, it scrolls to the top of the message instead of keeping your place so you have to keep scrolling to the bottom.
6. It will randomly lock the screen without pressing the power button or doing "knock on" before the timer expires.
7. Messenger crashes randomly.
8. The IR receiver is spotty at best. You need a sniper scope to aim it correctly.
9. The buttons are so small on Verizon I'm constantly messing with the volume instead of hitting the Power button when "Knock On" doesn't work.
10. The camera seems to lag when you move around.

:(

besides the messaging issue, i can see why someone would want to return it. Surprisngly, i notice some lag too...im on ATT..not always but sometimes noticeable...i rooted and i cleaned out all the junk on startup too...could be the LG UI. Nevertheless, those are definitely legitmate reasons why I would return mine, except im at 16 days so im fu*ked. overall...knock knock knock is awesome to me, and I wouldnt go back to the s3.

Sorry to hear that OP. With Verizon, we have 30 days to return, right?

At least you have a chance still to return... I have liked what Ive seen so far, I hope I enjoy the phone... but if not, its always nice to know we have a "test drive" period.

OP: I've experienced some of issues, but the thing that bothers me the most, is the camera. I can't believe how much they tout it's abilities in the commercials and in reviews...maybe I have a bad camera and need to exchange it for another, or the cameras on Nokia phone's (was using a 920) are just light years ahead of the rest. I have a few more days left to return and am contemplating the same decision as you. I like the phone, just think maybe I got one built on Friday ")

I'd exchange it. My first G2 exhibited the same behaviors. The grid-like effect that you've seen, is LG's screen technology; that won't go away. I've experienced occasional lag with my second unit. Powering off the device helps. I think of returning this one as well but what else is out there? I don't like the HTC One and two friends have had screen issues with their S4s. Sony phones are too angular.

Droid Maxx

i think some of your issues u posted like the lags and knock on seems to be a faulty isuue because mines work perfect. i get 0 lag running like 10 app in background. camera is great no lag, good pictures. knock on works good . remember u can only knock on a dead spot to lock the device.

the rest like text issue and ir and auto brightness could be fixed with a software update.

also i did to notice the faint grid of dots on the screen that you can see in direct light.
its like that on all the lg g2 screens its the way there screens was made. there are a few other phones out there i seen in store that has it also.

Can't say I disagree with your list of issues. For many, they are slight annoyances. But if they really bother you, then you should return the phone for something else. That's whats great about Android, you have a choice. Find what works best for you.

1. "Knock On" is a crapshoot, it works maybe half of the time.
Knock off seems to work fine, but sometime Knock On doesn't happen. I think this has more to do with the sleep state of the processor. Overall, I view this as a minor annoyance, certainly nothing I'd worry about. I'd estimate Knock-on works 80%, Knock-off 100% of time for me.
2. Auto-Brightness barely adjusts anything and when it does it's sssllloowww. (saw this mentioned in another thread)
I'd like to see improvements here as well. Good news is that this should be a simple software change. But this is so minor to me that really don't care that much.
3. There's a faint grid of dots on the screen that you can see in direct light. (saw this mentioned in another thread)
Don't see them. I'm sure they are there, but I've never seen them, even in bright light. I refuse to go looking for something I don't normally see, because then I'll always notice it and wonder why I went looking in the first place.
4. Even though the phone is supposedly a beast, lag still happens when going to app drawer and other random times.
Only seen some lag when background apps were updating. Normal use don't see this.
5. When text messaging, it scrolls to the top of the message instead of keeping your place so you have to keep scrolling to the bottom.
OK, this one I agree with, and maybe the only thing that has actually annoyed me. It does it intermittently. But at the same time, software update should fix this easily. Plus you aren't limited to the stock messaging app. Many use Handcent or similar. I'd also add I'd like to add functionality to get back to the list of text'd users. Sometimes hitting the back button kicks you out to homescreen rather than the list.
6. It will randomly lock the screen without pressing the power button or doing "knock on" before the timer expires.
Never experienced this.
7. Messenger crashes randomly.
Never had it crash once.
8. The IR receiver is spotty at best. You need a sniper scope to aim it correctly.
I'll also agree with this. Seems pretty weak. But coming from a certified "Remote Junkie", I'd never use this anyway. Only tried it out to see how it worked. Phone remotes in general suck 1000000000000x more than real dedicated remotes anyway. Don't get me started.
9. The buttons are so small on Verizon I'm constantly messing with the volume instead of hitting the Power button when "Knock On" doesn't work.
Personal preference. I've had good luck with the buttons, although I rarely use them.
10. The camera seems to lag when you move around.
Camera has been pretty good for me, other than poor low light performance and wonky flash.

But what works for me, might not work for you. You're the only one who can figure out if this is right for you or if there is something that better suits your needs.

1. "Knock On" is a crapshoot, it works maybe half of the time.
For me it's not a crapshoot but isn't perfect, knock ON is about 70% and knock OFF is about 99%
2. Auto-Brightness barely adjusts anything and when it does it's sssllloowww. (saw this mentioned in another thread)
Yeah, I probably agree with this but doesn't really bother me.
3. There's a faint grid of dots on the screen that you can see in direct light. (saw this mentioned in another thread)
Agreed but I only see it when sunlight hits it directly but at an angle. I don't use the phone much outside so this doesn't really bug me much.
4. Even though the phone is supposedly a beast, lag still happens when going to app drawer and other random times.
I almost never see any lag but when I do it is always when I'm doing something simple. Thinking it's more of a UI issue that can be corrected.
5. When text messaging, it scrolls to the top of the message instead of keeping your place so you have to keep scrolling to the bottom.
Hmmm... Mine doesn't do this.
6. It will randomly lock the screen without pressing the power button or doing "knock on" before the timer expires.
Yes, mine does this occasionally.
7. Messenger crashes randomly.
Haven't seen this.
8. The IR receiver is spotty at best. You need a sniper scope to aim it correctly.
I don't use the phone as remote.
9. The buttons are so small on Verizon I'm constantly messing with the volume instead of hitting the Power button when "Knock On" doesn't work.
This is probably my biggest gripe with the phone. I'm still not used to the buttons after a week.
10. The camera seems to lag when you move around.
I don't see this.

:(

I'd say you have valid complaints and if they bug you then return it. I like the screen, battery life and UI enough to stick with it. I had the Droid Maxx for a couple of weeks and have given that to my wife and don't regret it at all. For a +5" 1080p screen phone this one is still tops in my book, imperfections and all.

I have the VZW LG G2 and I have no issues... I actually love this phone. Knock on works as it should. Camera kicks butt. no lag. I couldn't imagine taking this phone back. I'm trying to find things I don't like about it seriously. Sucks you may have gotten a bad unit. Because if you had gotten a good unit, this post wouldn't exist via you.

It's a great phone.

Although I've only experienced 2 or 3 on your list, they're certainly not deal breaks for me. The bottom lithe the s that with any phone on the market you can draw up a list of bugs not unlike yours. It becomes a questionis of what bugs you the most.

I've had the HTC One, GS4 and now the G2. IMO the G2 is by far the most 'liveable' phone out there. For me, one of the most important features in a phone is battery life. I would have considered the. Maxx, but the camera is so bad, I didn't bother.

Verizon has 14 days and charge you a $35 restocking fee....

If you don't really like it in the first week it's probably a strong indication you never will.

It is too bad you are having so many issues but better you find out now than later.

I am not having many of the things you have noted but may be just lucky or we are using the phone differently.

Best of luck.

I've only been using mine for a couple of days but I have figured out a couple of things, especially about the "Knock On/Off". One, is that you have to make sure it's secure when you tap it. It won't work well if there's any give because it won't register one of the knocks completely. If it's flat on a table/desk it almost always works. Holding it firmly in one hand while hitting it with the other usually works pretty reliably too. If you're doing it with one hand and you don't have some kind of case to make it more grippable, then you have some issues because it's hard to keep it IN your hand and tap with the same hand. Just too dang slick. It really has to be a good firm contact in rapid succession. Once I got the "feel" it works every time for me.

Messaging: If you don't like that app, then the great thing about android is, you have DOZENS more to pick. I like GoSMS, some like Handcent and there are plenty of others to try.

The dots in sunlight: That's something that you don't see unless you REALLY look for it and even then it's harldy noticeable (IMO). If you are out in the sunlight looking at it all the time, at least you can read it clearly, unlike most of the pentile/amoled displays I've used.

IR Blaster: I don't see this as an issue since it's more like a "perk" than a feature. I have suitable remotes and bought this for it's communication/surfing/phone abilities which it FAR exceeds my demands.

Buttons: I will agree they are hard to "feel" but I almost never use them. Knock On/Off , as said above, works GREAT once I found the sweet spot and the pull down volume slider is really great. What would be really cool is if it did have the "active display" like the moto phones and have a volume slider on as part of the active area.

I've REALLY been impressed overall with this phone and the only major complaint I've had so far has been the back case being so dang slick. I got the Shell/Holster from the verizon store and that makes it a LOT easier to hold and use and if you pop out the kick stand you can slid a finger through it and it makes it super secure and easy to use in one hand. I almost always do it that way now.

That being said, I really can't see going to the Maxx/Ultra from this phone. I'm a designer and really critical of color and this phone has the most gorgeous screen in normal light conditions. The Droids really are harsh and much lower pixel density in comparison. I'd be more likely to go to the One or S4. For me though, I've really been impressed with it so far.

I bought the LG G2 while waiting for the Note 3. I ignorantly returned my G2 and decided to register my prints with the NSA. :D Now I'm coming back to the G2 because I realized how much I liked it. I wrote down all the pro's and con's of the current Verizon lineup and the G2 came out on top IMHO.
