I'm currently a Verizon customer thinking of switching to T-mobile. I like T-mobile's new plans, but I wanted to hear about their service from current users. Can anyone who lives in Long Island comment about the quality of the coverage? I live in Nesconset, but I go to school in Old Westbury. My main concern is with the coverage from the Nesconset/Smithtown area all the way through Nassau county and into the city. I imagine the voice coverage is comparable to the other carriers considering Long Island is such a populated area (correct me if I'm wrong). I'm more interested in how the 3g and 4g/Hspa coverage is. Price is important to me but not as important as service and coverage so I'm trying to make as informed of a decision as I can. Any input would be appreciated guys. Thanks in advance!

I've got the $30 plan and I couldn't be happier with the service in Albuquerque, NM. I'm getting 10Mbps download speeds consistently. Of course, we're a fairly small city, so that may positively skew my speed.
That said, the coverage map for northern NM is spot on. For example, if you zoom into Los Alamos, NM, you can see that they only have spotty 2G service (It's a mountain town so the spotty coverage is expected). Until someone with real experience in your area chimes in, I'd scrutinize the map; if it's solid green everywhere, you're probably golden.

Thanks for the replies guys. Figured I should give an update. I've been trying out the HTC one on T-mobile for a few days now, and I've been pleased so far. I will admit that the service on my street isn't very good, but the wi-fi calling makes up for the lack of service in my home. I've had excellent service pretty much everywhere else I've gone though. I'm coming from a 3g verizon phone and the data speeds have been much faster. I was even getting 4g (not sure if it was hspa+21 or 42, is there a way to tell besides doing speed tests?) in some spots that I used to get edge on verizon. I'm going to test it out for a few more days, but I think I'm going to make the permanent switch.

It is entirely likely that your "4G" was LTE. If you are in or near a emerging LTE market it can and will pick it up. The easiest way to tell is download the speedtest.net app and check it after your test to see if it was connected to umts or lte.

I've switched from Verizon, to t-mobile then back to Verizon. I also live on LI, t-mobile's voice coverage is good, except where it isn't. I'm in old field, in Setauket a lot and get no signal in many areas there, whereas Verizon has excellent coverage there. Say what you will, but Verizon has an awesome network for calls. Never had a dropped call in 8 years with them!

Yeah I can agree that Verizon has the best coverage. T-mobile however, is an awesome value for prepaid.

It's all about where you travel and checking coverage maps to see what works for you. Verizon does overall have the best nationwide coverage but it's not the best everywhere. I know at my house AT&T and T-Mobile have the best signal indoors, Verizon is ok, and Sprint is terrible. I've used all four carriers at one point in time and I've been happy with Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. I really only had issues with Sprint which has horrible data speeds in my area and terrible coverage at home.
I could say Sprint is terrible and for me yes it was but that's not for everybody as some people obviously have better luck with them than I did, it's just not for me. As is T-Mobile isn't right for everybody nor will AT&T or Verizon be.

I too am thinking of switching over 4 lines when my contract is over, currently with Verizon. But comparing speedtests with a friend on T-Mobile, they need to get LTE going. My speed (S3) is roughly 4 times faster than his (Note 2). Any timeframe for T-Mobile to get their lte service going in So Cal? Hopefully within a year.
I would guess it depends what part of SoCal. They already have LTE running in parts of LA. My guess is that most of the LA area should have LTE in the next year. You can see areas where LTE has been working using the Sensorly maps (select "T-Mobile - 4G").
I do wish that T-Mobile would announce a rollout plan, showing when they plan to turn LTE on in various cites. At least they have announced they hope to have LTE coverage available to 200 million US residents by the end of the year -- so it seems like most large cities should have LTE in the next 6 months.
