Thinking of a Chromebook

Clementine_3

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
So I can post something in 'post your last purchase'. Either that or I have a gift card for Best Buy and should spend it before it expires. So. Chromebooks. I'm thinking no Lenovo but am open to anything else I guess. Who has what or what would you recommend?

^^^ I mean other than having something to post in "last purchase"... :p :D
What other reason would there be?

Just general 'my laptop is too slow now because of Windows 10 and I really hate MS anyway' stuff. I sort of think it's running out of serviceable time so a CB would give it a nice rest. I do still plan on using it, lots of pics and files etc. on it, I'm just thinking a CB would be faster for everyday posting here. :p

I've actually gotten to the point where I mostly use the Googly stuff and a full blown lappy isn't totally necessary. Email, forums, useless stuff use...

If you just have an itch to play with ChromeOS and not necessarily fixated on a Chromebook, take a look at Cub Linux. It's a Linux distro with its interface customized to simulate ChromeOS (note as Chrome is proprietary, Cub uses ChromiumOS).
https://cublinux.com/
If you use a virtual machine program like VirtualBox on whichever computer you run, you can load up a Cub Linux VM and you'll have a fully functional, working ChromiumOS system to mess with, and you won't have to put out any money at all. (... to use that gift card on something else)

Learning Linux is on my list of things to do, but maybe not today.

I was just thinking that a CB would be sort of like a big tablet-y-ish thing. Maybe I'll look at the smartwatches since mine seems to be behaving erratically at best these days. Oh. I don't know. :)

Of course I really don't need anything at BB but I have a giiiiift caaaaaarrrrrrd

actually.. if I had a gift card to use... and nothing better to buy.. nothing I need

I might look at getting a VR goggles to play with... a new toy...

It's not that much, $50. That's a nice bit of change though. I got it when I ordered an emergency phone replacement online. The email said it expired (and I've deleted that!) but when I checked online it didn't say anything about expiring. I figure I should use it just in case.

@Clementine_3, I switched to Chromebooks last October. At this point I no longer even have a Windows device or computer in my house. I haven't found a single thing I can't accomplish. FWIW, I don't game, so I'm not sure on that. But I print, scan, program Arduino boards, and everything else.

I'd recommend a good 4GB RAM / 32 GB Internal one. I haven't had a slowness issue once and with 100GB Drive storage for 2 years I have plenty of room. I bought two of these (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B015ZD71P8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1), one for me and one for my wife. Out of the box I was fully set up and running within 2 minutes. It was no more setup than simply logging into my Google account. There are a few minor other things to set up like trusted devices so you don't need to enter your password and such, but they are minor. Also, updates take no more than 30 seconds or so.

All that doesn't take into account how light and cool it is to use when its on your lap (which is how I mostly use it). It is very comfortable to use in that manner. For the uses you describe I think you will be very happy with a Chromebook.

Meh.
Just ordered an Acer Iconia One tablet. I'll get use out of it and it's easier to tote/toss around than a Chromebook. It's probably a better purchase than a CB or laptop right now, I'll put that decision off for a day or 300. Of course, I had to spend $100 to save $50. Oh well, what's a girl to do.
Thanks for all the suggestions/input!

Virtual Reality man. Why get a heavy physical keyboard? Plus tablets are easier to carry. Got one myself, a tablet that is, but it was really too big to carry around. Even in my shoulder bag. Not a purse, dangit!
