Thinking of selling my laptop and getting a Chromebook

jmcook79

I mainly use my laptop for 3 things, streaming flash video, paying bills, and browsing. I'm seriously considering selling it and picking up a Chromebook. I understand that Chrome OS does support flash so I'm wondering if anyone owns one and has any experience with it. I'm thinking of these 3 any suggestions?

i had the samsung chromebook for a bit until my friend needed a computer so i gave him mine.

it was great for the price and with what you can do with it. i am definitely going to look into getting another one. i want to try and see if i can get linux installed on it.....just to be a geek:D

I have a Chromebook, and posted quite a bit about it a few months ago when I got it. Bottom line: I'm very happy with it--but I used its idea of Linux for roughly 30 minutes, then realized it wasn't going to cut it for me. So I installed my favorite Linux distro, Kubuntu, and all has been well ever since. And no problems with Flash, either. :D

Flash is my main concern. I notice on my laptop flash is choppy in Google Chrome while it plays fine in Firefox. Did you experience this with the stock Chrome OS? Thanks for the input I plan on making my decision by tomorrow morning!

Honestly, I can't say one way or the other. I LITERALLY ran its pre-installed OS for about 30 minutes before deciding to install a more real Linux. I can't recall if I even tried anything with Flash in those 30 minutes.

well flash works fine on my pc laptop using chrome so not sure what is up with your browser.

the chrome browser on the chromebook as well ran fine....so i think you should be good to go.

Awesome all I needed was a little confirmation lol. I was seriously considering a nexus 7 but If it's going to mainly used for media I would want to buy a case with a kickstand and possibly a bluetooth keyboard and I though what's the point when I can just get a Chromebook.

I just wish that Best Buy still had the one with the 320GB hard drive since I plan on using my Best Buy card. Did you have the same Samsung listed in my original post?

Well I ended up going with the Acer and I like it so far but how the heck do I view my local storage remaining?

Thanks! So far the Chromebook is OK but I honestly miss my laptop. In a week I should know whether or not it's for me.

I think my perfect netbook would be one with Android as well as flash support. I'm skeptical though because all the ones I've found have really mixed reviews.

Im thinking either the HP 14 (non-wifi only comes with 200mb free T-Mobile data for life), the newer Samsung model, or the Toshiba when it comes out.

Its darn near impossible to keep up with all of these though, and what model came out what year

One thing I noticed is that it only took about 10 seconds to upload a 98MB video to Google Drive and that's with a max of 512kbps upload speed, which is the best I can get with my DSL. How is this even possible? It takes forever to email large files!

I have a few more questions. First of all can I save files directly to Google drive bypassing my Chromebook? Also (this is probably the first time this question has been asked lol) I may trade in my Acer for the 14" white HP Chromebook. My roommate smokes a carton a week...will I have to worry about it turning yellow?

i think it has to do how google compresses large files vs sending it through emails which can't handle large files very easily.

not sure what you mean by bypassing your chromebook? if you mean from other android devices then yes.....you can even use another computer to access it.

and lol on having your pc turn yellow.....that would need an extreme amount of smoke to do that......so no i would not worry about that......i would worry more about it getting dirty from transporting and handling it.

I mean instead of downloading a file from the internet to my Chromebook's storage and then uploading it to Google drive, just downloading it straight to Google drive and cutting out the middle man.

That's good about the smoke...our window blinds only last about a year before they are yellow!

Honestly I'm not warming up to it like I did with Android. 2 Days with Android and I was hooked. For some reason the Chromebook just doesn't "feel" right. That and problems with eBay not working correctly, not being able to use Skype or yahoo messenger to video chat ( I never even thought of that before I bought it and most of my friends and family use those two.) and I'm having serious doubts on whether I'm going to stick with it or not.
