Thinking of switching to an Android. Emoji possible on android??

I have an iPhone 4 32gb and its... getting to be too boring for me. I can't develop any apps without paying and its the same thing every year. I have a small nit-pick though.

If I root my android, can the android use emoji? The iphone can use both text emoji and smiley emoji. I would like to be able to send emoji to other androids and iphones.

True you don't need to root your phone to send emoji, and go SMS is a lot of fun, but I'm having a problem seeing the emojicons sent from a friend's phone and he can't view mine. I set his iPhone to the proper settings to be able receive and send emoji and I have the go SMS emoji plugin, sooooo what else do I need to do to make this work? Thanks
