Root Thinknig of rooting, couple questions.

Hello everyone! New to the site here. I did a little bit of searching/browsing around but I wasn't able to find what I was lookin' for. I'm interested in rooting my phone, know the risks and have rooted other devices in the past just never a phone. I'm not completely up to date,a lot of people seem to be using CWM and cyanogen. I'll admit I don't know which to go with, or even if you have to choose as I'm not completely sure what all they do.

Am I correct in assuming since theres no roms at the moment, theres no way to get more recent versions of Android? I would just enjoy some more functionality ,cleaner home screens and well, anything else I can't do now. I'm on AT&T. Forgive me if I missed what I was looking for already.

Thanks!

Hello, and welcome!

CWM is the recovery. The golden standard :). There's also TWRP, but that's a whole different team, and it's not really usable on our small screen since it's touch based. We can easily build CWM, but not the other.

CyanogenMod is the actual ROM. And this will probably most likely be the only one since we have a small group here. It might start getting a little busier during the summer, since this is the nicest GoPhone AT&T has and people might pick it up when they start selling their iPhones before the update. Or in general, just people selling their phones for fall releases, but I think we pretty much have two people who can dev here at the moment.

CyanogenMod is easily theme-able. I actually forget I'm on Gingerbread since I use a pretty nice Google inspired theme with the Roboto Slab font. Plus, a lot of apps backport the Holo theme for 2.3. You'll love it.

As for ICS/Jelly Bean, we don't know yet. It's a work in process.

There actually is a rom my cm(cyanogenmod) 7.2 (our current android version) I'm working on a cm9(ics) but its getting the best of me and I cannot overcome the bugs which are no audio and the phone apk won't work meaning its just a silent light box with chrome and wifi also doesn't work

Many thanks for clearing that up guys.I searched many forums , but since this is a much less common phone a lot of the forums I found seemed very iffy. I asked the same question and the OP of a how-to thread didn't even completely know the difference between the two, just what they're called. Tonight once I'm done with my day I'll be rooting this little thing.

And cameron, glad to hear you're working on it. If I knew any coding or development beyond batch/config files I'd offer to help, heh. I'll be posting back here with the results!
